What to give a 1yr old for a cold/stuffy nose?
What do you give for a cold/stuffy nose?
DD has a cold but no fever (as of yet)...her nose is running and she has a little trouble breathing....
what is best??

Unfortunately you can't give anything. I use Vicks Baby rub and J&J vapor bath, saline drops with nasal aspiration and a humidifier.

I do the exact same thing.

Do I just rub a little of the Baby Vicks on her chest (like you would do on an adult?) ? I will also get the saline drops....

We just do chest and sometimes a little on her back

i just suction her nose and hold her in the bathroom with a hot shower running. if she has a fever or is in pain, i'll give infant's tylenol.

I use saline nose drops and suction his nose for him, and run the humidifier. That's really all you are supposed to do for them--if they have a cough, you can try honey since DC is over a year.
Sometimes pediatricians will tell parents to use a decongestant of some sort, but I would check in before giving DC anything.

You know, I was about to use vicks baby rub the other day with Yael and just for kicks I googled it and it turns out that the Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends not using it because there's some link to infant breathing problems.
For the OP - I don't use anything, per my pediatrician's instructions. Cold medicine poses a risk for children, particularly those under 2, and research shows it doesn't help much anyway. Let the cold run its course, and to help your DD feel better, elevate the crib mattress, use saline drops and an aspirator, use a cool mist humidifier, and steam up the bathroom if her nose gets really stuffy

Does the AAP link the breathing problem to vicks menthol or just any vapor rub? The baby rub doesn't have menthol in it - it's lavender and rosemary .

i think they say it is actually because it really doesnt clear you out, it gives the illusion that you are better or something along that line... it isnt necessarily a health hazard, more that they say that it makes people think they are better then they are... they actually say it isnt good for anyone.. but i still use it...
i used a the vicks vapor fan last year with ds when he was about 3 months old and i also have used the shower soothers (they release vapor as you shower) while ds is sitting in the hot steamy bath... no it doesnt cure him but it aleast gives him some relief
