storing summer clothes...

I am so overwhelmed. I have summer and fall/winter stuff all mixed up. A few questions...

1. How do you decide which regular tanks to keep and what to toss? Do you store your tanks and t's or do you keep them handy for layering?

2. What about dressy dresses? Do you store the summery ones or do you keep them all hanging in the closet?

3. Shoes... do you keep the boxes or throw them away? When do you toss a pair of summer shoes like espadrilles?

I went through a million sizes this year and several shopping sprees and I am so confused as to what I even own! I need help!

1. I keep all my tanks in a drawer and don't ever put them away. I always wear a tank under whatever shirt, blouse, etc. that I'm wearing, so I love them for layering.

2. Dressy dresses are all in one closet hanging together. I don't ever separate them by season or anything.

3. I bought these great boxes at IKEA and the bottom of my closet is just stacks of these boxes. I use them for my shoes. They have a clear window on the front so you can see your shoes. Since those are all filled up right now, new shoes I keep the boxes. But eventually I get rid of the boxes and put them in these clear front ones.

I toss shoes not based on season, but more on whether or not I will wear them again (usually due to the condition they're in).

We put our out of season clothes in our large luggage. We live in an apt so this helps save a ton of space! We just take the stuff out the one time per year we go away.

I usually leave out tank tops - the cami ones that I wear all winter. I put away the ribbed ones which I don't tend to wear under things.

My dresses I leave hanging in my closet.

HTH!

I don't think I have EVER done a whole winter summer wardrobe switch. First of all, I'm always cold, so in the summer, I will wear pants, long sleeves, etc. and in the winter, I wear like 2 or 3 layers (but I'll STILL wear short sleeve!).

Tanks are always in their own drawer because I wear them to bed, running or under shirts.

Dresses are in the farthest part of the closet. Some are still good for fall and spring with something under or over it.

Shoe boxes are gone. Instead, I have the long rubbermaid boxes for under my bed. Heels are in one, flats and sneakers in another. Boots in the closet.

I do the same thing as #1 and #2. DH made me a shoe closet so I keep them all in the boxes stacked on top of each other, but I really need the clear boxes so I'll look into the ones at Ikea. I try to keep my boots and winter stuff together and my flipflops and sandals, but sometimes that doesn't last long. I still wear my flipflops to take out the dog or get a pedi

Re: storing summer clothes...

1. I keep a good number of my tanks out all year round - mostly in neutral colors i.e. white, black, grey, navy.

The other summer colors I pack away with all my other summer clothes in a big storage bin we keep in the hall closet.

2. Dressy dresses are hung in the hall closet towards the back, along with DH's suits. Since these are not worn regularly this works for us.

3. Again, I switch for seasons. I store all footwear that is not appropriate for the season I'm in, in bins that we keep under our bed. I keep dressy shoes in their respective boxes in my closet.

Just wanted to add - that I "clean out" my items everytime I switch them. If something is worn looking or has stains, I toss it.

Majority of the time I won't end up wearing all the trendy items I purchased the season before. So I make things easier for myself & toss any item I didn't get much use of that season. Any shoe that I wore out gets tossed - esp all my rubber flip flops. I just replace the following season.

I keep my ON tanks and other cute ones that I have the lace at the neckline at the top/bottom. Anyhting else gets put away

2. What about dressy dresses? Do you store the summery ones or do you keep them all hanging in the closet?

All my summer dresses got put away. I don't have much room.

3. Shoes... do you keep the boxes or throw them away? When do you toss a pair of summer shoes like espadrilles?

Summer shoes (minus 2 prs of flip flops) went into a Rubbermaid bin and went off to storage as well.

I feel your pain, it's so stressful to deal with this.

1.I keep my tanks out all year long. I wear one everyday. I always need to have something tucked into my jeans/dress pants/skirts.

2. Dressy dresses I keep out all year long in the back of my closet. If I haven't worn them in a long time or wore them to a few events I donate them.

3. I throw the boxes away. I have all my shoes on the bottom of my closet. I put the right shoe on the floor and the left shoe on top of it. I toss summer shoes if they are looking rough or if I didn't wear them at all.

As for seeing what you own this is what I do. I pull everything out of the closet and put it on the bed. I divide everything up into piles. Work clothes, work tops, casual etc. If the clothes are too big I donate them, I keep a large plastic bag next to me so I can throw them in right away, if they are too small I keep them and pray they will fit. If I haven't worn something in a while or don't like how I feel in it I donate it also.

When I hang everything back up I hang them in order. So all my casual tops go together, my work shirts, my suits are next to each other. I also bought trouser hangers that can hold 5 pair of pants each. This saved so much room. I have those hangers organized too light dress pants, dark dress pants, casual pants, jeans etc. With seasonal clothes I store them in a suitcase along with the seasonal shoes until I will need them again.

Before I hang everything up I iron anything that is wrinkly. That way everything in my closet can be worn at a moments notice. It is so time consuming but in the long run it is worth it because getting ready everyday doesn't take as long.

I keep out most for layering. I toss anythat do not fit well, have a stain etc.

2. What about dressy dresses? Do you store the summery ones or do you keep them all hanging in the closet?

I keep them hanging. Right now it is just DH and I so we have the extra closet space.

3. Shoes... do you keep the boxes or throw them away? When do you toss a pair of summer shoes like espadrilles?

I toss the boxes. I have an area of my close that I keep all my shoes, it is shelved. I toss them when they look too worn.

Re: storing summer clothes...

Most of my tanks I keep in my dresser year round for layering.

The majority of my summer stuff gets put away every fall, including shoes. I keep out only a few short sleeve t's and one or two pairs shorts in case we go away mid-winter.

I keep most of shoes in thier original boxes. I can usually remember exactly what shoes are in each box by looking at the box.

The only shoes that aren't kept in boxes are my everyday black boots, sneakers and flip flops.

I usually do what I call my "conversion weekend" each fall and spring where I switch over my clothes.

I've gotten lazy in recent years, and I've kept a lot of my clothes on the hangers and put them in the big clear storage bins. That way I can just re-hang them the following season. It takes up more space, but it's a lot quicker to switch over my wardrobe each season.

I hardly ever throw away clothes. I've spent a fortune on my clothes and shoes, and I have such a hard time getting rid of them. Most items have only been worn a handful of times.
