Sometimes I hear a really deep one, usually its on Sarurday. It sounds like a deeeeeeeeep tuba kinda noise....anyone know what that is?

I don't hear the other horns though, but I also don't live right near the fire dept.

Where do you live ? I know that the Nassau County Jail siren has a test on Saturday's at 2pm. If you are in the Salisbury/Levittown/East Meadow/South Hicksville area you will be able to hear it.

It's not really low where I am (Salisbury) but it only goes off on Saturday's at 2pm, that's why I suggested it.

For the OP - yes, I hear the FD "stuff" go off. doesn't bother me though. we're about 1/2 -1 mile away from the closest FD

Bellmore, North of Sunrise...

I live in the same area. I hear the same sound throughout the week. It's from the N. Bellmore FD on Newbridge, I believe. I live off of Newbridge, a few blocks south of the FD, so I can hear it. I also hear the chimes from the Bellmore FD near the train station. It doesn't really phase me though.

I used to hear it when I lived with my parents, we were maybe a mile away, but I don't hear it where i live now, and I am about the same distance.

They shouldn't be sounding it all the time - usually they do it at noon or some other time for a test.
It really is just a throwback to the old days before there were pagers.

I hear it and am approx. 1/2 mile from the fire dept. However, the house I grew up in is at least 1.5 miles from the same fire dept. and I remember hearing it there as well...

I am around the corner from a sub station and I only hear the alarm at noon everyday. Other than that, I don't really hear anything. I was actually a little worried when we looked at the house that we might be hearing sirens at all hours of the night, but after 5 years - nothing.

I can however hear the train whistle on some nights and that is miles away - go figure!
