Can you explain to me (cloth diaper related)
How does the pee stay in? What do you need in addition to the cloth?
I ask because a friend began using them recently and her kids are peeing EVERYWHERE!!!! There are puddles all over the house, which she doesn't clean, and their new house (new construction, lived there less than 1 month) SMELLS HORRIBLE!!!
Their minivan could be wrung out.
What does she need to help absorption? Aren't there rubber pants?
I am lost on this, but need to help her.
TIA!!

They are like towels, they absorb a certain amount, and after that they leak. They have to be changed every few hours, if they are leaking, she isn't using them correctly.
The gel powder in regular disposible diapers expands to something like a thousand times their original weight, while cloth diapers just stop absorbing once they are full, and leak.

Re: Can you explain to me (cloth diaper related)
Yikes! I use cloth and have never once had a 'puddle'----I agree with the AP that they do need to be changed when wet--like every 2-3 hours depending on the kid. Perhaps she isn't using a cover? There are many different kinds of cloth diapers, some are all in one, or you stuff with inserts, some people use the 'old school' prefolds with a cover. If she is using just a plain cloth prefold diaper without a cover, of course it will leak.

PS there are lots of other reasons cloth diapers leak--including using diaper cream, the wrong detergent or not washing them correctly

Thanks. I seriously don't even know how to bring this up. Her kids even smell like pee. I think she is overwhelmed, but she is now demanding kid #3 from her husband.

Is she just using the pre-fold? THe cloth thing? If so she needs to put a cover OVER it.. like a thirsties cover.
THere is a GREAT forum called diaperswappers... you can tell her about it... say you heard about it and thought she might be interested in it....
ALso you could find a few vendors on etsy that make diaper covers and send it to her and say you stumbled upon it and thought she might like it....
Sounds like she is doing something wrong... I've NEVER had any circumstance like what you are describing and My daughter is in cloth and sleeps 13 hours straight through the night with them on!!

Agree. All bets is she is using them without a cover. DS has been in closth since birth (8.5months) no puddles ever.
