Price for construction

I have my brother in law doing work for us starting tomorrow he is charging us $200 a day for his labor and he figures our bedroom will be $600.00 with us paying on top of that the supplies needed. I want to make sure this sounds fair which i think it does but figured to throw it out here to see.

He is doing the following: fixing the baseboard heat so its not in the closing anymore (plumbing) putting new base board covers on (install), laminating the sheet rock on the walls and ceilings, fixing the closet to make it a complete wall of closets divided it up into two, installing crown molding, floor molding, all trim, new door and jam, tape and spakle all joints so ready for us to prime/paint. Oh and installing new face plates/grounding the outlets. We are doing all demo in the room (taking out the modlings, doorways, closet area, taking the old baseboard out, etc.

Re: Price for construction

$200 for a day? If you divide that by 8 hours of work approximately- thats about $25 an hour- that sounds like a HUGE bargain to me!

Your BIL is charging you $200 per day? My hubby would never charge his in-laws that much...I think $125-150 would be more appropriate. BUT, thats still less than what a company would charge you.

Most of the good carpenters I know charge upwards of $250 per day for side work so I think $200 is reasonable.

Re: Price for construction

I've heard that contractors get about $300 a day on LI but that is for insured labor. It's hard to say whether it's a bargain or not because you don't say if he's highly skilled at this type of work and you don't know how long it will take. If he charges $200 a day but takes 20 days it's a lot more expensive than someone that only charges $300 a day but has all the tools and skills to get it done in a week.

Well she had said he's going to charge $600, so that's 3 days of work. I'm guessing he must be pretty good at what he does to get it done in three days because that's quite a bit of work. Like someone else mentioned, $200 a day for good work is probably a deal for what insured contractors would charge, but probably a little higher then what family should charge. I would go head and use him though, because atleats you're secure with his work and you would feel comfortable with him being in your house as opposed to a stragner.

Re: Price for construction

he started on the work, going well we should be ready to paint tomorrow/monday. then he will have to come back to do the trim work so at least another day $200.

Call me Crazy but I'm gonna put it out there..agree or not.. I would absolutely FLIP if my BIL charged me $1 for any labor! Material I totally understand 100%..but Labor? Isn't this suppose to be family? Is this your DH's brother? or?

My family constantly has some projects going on & we all help out,all the guys have some field of construction expertise,as we speak my DH is taping & spackling at my moms.
I guess we can say one hand washes the other. Don't get me wrong, I am always greatful and I always thank the family member with a GC or some sort of token of thanks..but not flat out cash.

To answer the question,I have been told $200 is very reasonable.

Doing work to help out a parent is one thing, but I think it's perfectly acceptable to ask a sibling to pay something if it's as involved as the OP is having done. Especially if this is his regular line of work. If he's turning down other jobs to help family then it's not fair to expect him to forego his regular income. If I was lucky enough to have a sibling in construction I would never ask him to do a job for me without offering to pay.

I came off too strong (not my intention)
You're right, its his line of work, he's doing it as a job..he should be paid.

If we're weekend warriors, I see nothing wrong with helping out one another,no charge. This time its you, next time its me & so on.
