flying with dd in 2 weeks... what do i need to know with some questions!

first off im petrified of flying but dont mind it to NC since its so quick but i hate it even more when i go with out DH to distract me... and well.. this time.. im flying with abby alone! i dont even know where to begin with all the questions... so bare with me.

My parents are driving down and meeting me there the next day. im staying at my brothers and they have everything i need once i get there... storller, carseat, high chair, changing table, bathtub, exersaucer etc.

i dont like flying with too much luggage so my parents are taking abby and i's luggage in the car im only packing enough to get us 2 days worth to take on the plane with me.

I did not get her a seat on the plane as i didnt want to spend the extra $$ but dh booked the flight online..so this is where all my questions begin...

1. do i need to notify the airline that i will be flying with an infant?
2. (i will be holding her, since we didnt buy a seat.) I have the baby bjorn shes comfy in it but will i be allowed to take her out of the bjorn or does sheneed to be secure in it at all times?
3. will i regret not having a stroller with me? (dd is 16lbs and im afraid my backs going to be screaming and she will want to stretch out. i only have a big clunky stroller do i need to run out and get an umbrella stroller... theres a good chance dh will lose his marbles if i tell him i need to have anything else)
4. How do i travel with bottles/ formula?
5. the last time i flew to NC i got diverted for 4 hours to alantic city luckly there was no baby but for a JUST IN CASE type of thing i want to have a can of powdered formula with me that i can make as many bottles as i need in the case of emergency this happens and im out of the ones i have pre made.
6. what kind of documents do i need to have with me to fly with her?
7. i will only have a carry on and my diaperbag or i may combine and put it all in one to have less to carry.

Any other pointers would be more then appreciated!

I can't answer all your questions, but when i flew with dd they wouldn't let me keep her in the bjorn on the plane.
I would also get an umbrella stroller if you are flying out of somewhere like laguardia or JFK, if you are flying out ot islip you are better off without one, that airport is so easy so you won't have to stand and walk too much with the baby and it will be less for you to lug.

I flew alone with my DS right around the time he was 12 months.....I would take both a carryon and a diaper bag---I had the carryon with everything I didn't necessarily need while on the flight stowed overhead and the diaperbag with everything I needed for DS to stow under the seat. I did bring a stroller--one of those super cheap ones from BRU for like $20 or less---for me DS was a bit older and heavier, I ended up using it when we got delayed just to stroll around the airport. My only other reason for a stroller was I would be alone with him thru security and I wanted somewhere to put him down while I put my shoes back on, etc. I am no help with the formula. As far as documents I brought his birth certificate. HTH!

thank you ladies soooooo much! i really really appreciate it... see dd is only 4 months old. and i have NO IDEA what kind of stroller to get. i mean eventually i will need an umbrella stroller anyway but i was hoping not to spend the $$... i guess i could check out the consignment shops and see what i can find thats safe for her.

You defintiely have to inform the airline as the baby needs their own boarding pass.

Nobody ever asked for my sons birth certificae when we flew but I think it is required to prove age if there is a discrepancy. I would just have a copy with me. Bring extra formula and leave your worries at home! You will be so prepared for this and everyting will go smoothly.

I never notified the airline in advance. When you get your boarding pass, thats when we informed them of the baby and got a pass for him. We needed our IDs and the baby's birth certificate.

You can't leave her in the bjorn during takeoff and landing. Otherwise she can be in or out as you please.

I would bring a stroller and gate check it. I would think it would be so much easier to put the baby in the stroller and bags in basket or hanging from stroller rather than try to carry everything.

Keep in plastic ziploc bags so you can easily take them out for inspection.

Thats a great idea. I kept a ziploc bag with formula in my diaper bag at all times in case of emergency when DS was younger.

Your drivers license and her original birth certificate.

If you decide to bring a stroller it might be easier to carry everything.

thank you all so much for your responses. im going to be looking into getting a lightweight stroller. im going to check a consignement shop by my house and then check out bbb see what i can get thats safe for her and super easy to travel with. again thank you all so much!

I would notify the airline b/c there is a limit to the number of lap babies on a flight and you will need a boarding pass for her.

I would bring a copy of her BC b/c they might ask for it.

You cannot have the baby restrained at takeoff or landing so you can't use the bjorn then - but during the flight it is okay if you are comfortable that way.

I just flew with DD last month when she was 4 months old so I can answer a lot of your questions. :)

Yes, you have to notify them. They should have asked when you booked online if you'd be traveling with an infant.

You can take her out whenever you want. She doesnt have to be strapped on you at all. When we flew with DD, all we had was her car seat. So we checked the car seat at the gate and just carried her on...she sat on my lap and slept the whole time. (you can check car seats and strollers at the gate and it doesn't count as a carry on)

We regretted it. Only cause we were delayed a few hours so we were just sitting at the airport. She obviously did not want to sit in her car seat all that time. It would have been nice to have a stroller to roll her around. We didn't realize we would just be able to check it at the gate, otherwise we would have brought it.

We only packed enough bottles to get through one day (4 bottles). I just put them all in my diaper bag, and thats also where I packed her can of formula. You're not aloud to bring more than 3ozs of fluid on a plane, and that includes pre-mixed bottles. So we put 3ozs of water in each bottle so we wouldn't have to buy any water at the airport. When it was time for her bottle, we combined all the water into one bottle and gave it to her. Had we been delayed more, we would have had to buy some water.

We didn't need any documents for her (though this may be specific to the airline we flew with...check with your airline). We brought her vx records from the doctors office but we only did that as a precaution.

I would not combine them cause I would want to have easy access to my diaper bag while on the airplane. JMO.
