Gift Receipt question when using a freebie gift card towards the purchase
If you use a $15 gift card that was given to you from the store in a circular and it was good towards a purchae of at least $15 would the gift receipt of the product be at zero value?
I went to Kohls and purchased a toy that was originally $28 then 35% off that brought it down to around $20 then I used the $15 gift card I got from their circular. I had to pay out of pocket like $5 and some change. I asked for a gift receipt but I'm wondering if it would be in the amount of the product value or just how much I paid
Anyone know??

It should be for the total price you paid ~ $20. The method of payment doesn't make a difference.

That's what I'm hoping because I would be so embarrased if she wanted to exchange the toy for something else and they would tell her to find something $5 worth.

Should be for total purchase amount, but if you paid $15 in a gift card, they will probably give her a store credit or gift card for $15 and the rest as cash.
Generally, however you pay is how it is returned.

Re: Gift Receipt question when using a freebie gift card towards the purchase
I think it depends on the store. I know when I recently used gcs like these at The Children's Place and Toys R Us, they deducted the promotional gift card amount off the price of the item first, then totaled the balance so I only paid tax on that.
Then I had to return the pants to The Children's Place and even with the regular receipt they only gave me back the cash amount I gave them, I didn't get back the $10 promotional gc amount and they wouldn't put that $10 towards a different item.
ETA: I think Kohl's has a good return policy, I'd just give the gift without the gift receipt but leave the part of the tag that says Kohls, just pull off the price.

in this case I would most likely NOT give a gift receipt- I think they would do better returning with no receipt

At Kohls they will give you a merchandise credit whether you have the gift receipt or not. The only thing that the gift receipt is guaranteeing is that the person returning it can get the value you paid not the value it is at the store at the time they return it.
