Granite Vs. Silestone (sp?)

Do they really look similar? Is Silostone noticeably more reasonable?

They don't look anything alike to me.

Granite has a lot more movement lots of variation in color. We put Madre Gold in our old home and you could get 3 different variations of color for that particular one. You are suppose to seal it every year but we didn't and it still looked great. You can put hot stuff directly on it and nothing will happen (out of the oven hot). If you do go with a light color you just have to be careful with staining, but I think common sense plays a roll in that part. If you see red wine spilled on the counter, you are not going to leave it, KWIM.

Silestone you do not have to seal and it is a solid color. So you are not picking out a slab that you want. It is senstive to heat (both of my SIL's have it there kitchen and just from putting a spoon that was in something hot it left a mark). The light color stains easily also, just like granite.

I personally love the look of granite. Cost wise, its the same. Silestone comes in different grades just like granite.

I am not sure this is true! I have Silestone in my kitchen and I have taken pots from directly off the stove top (boiling water/pasta) and put it directly on my counter (whcih is a light color) and have no marks.

I love my Silestone counters. They are not porous so there is no maintenance. I just wipe them down at night with clorex anywhere spray and they look great. I can cut directly on them and there are no scratches.

You obviously wont pick out the exact slap as with Granite but there are some great color choices with veining or without etc....

Re: Granite Vs. Silestone (sp?)

Silestone is a particular brand of solid surface. There are many varieties of solid surface, each of which has different properties. Some are more solid colors, some have interesting designs and patterns. Some are sensitive to heat, some are more heat-resistant than granite.

I love my granite because of the shine.... I really find them to be little maintance. I just wipe them down with a wet paper towel and that does the trick!

I love my granite because of the variations in color and of course the shine. I have seen many silestone tops but prefer granite completely.

I prefer Silestone (or other bands like Zodiaq).

I like the maintenance-free aspect of it. No yearly sealing. No worry about stains.

My Zodiaq looks just like granite. I can't count how many people that came into my house and said "i love your granite countertops".

Re: Granite Vs. Silestone (sp?)

we just ordered silestone for our master bath, we were told it has a lot of the same properties as granite but its a man made stone, but stone none the less......

we chose silestone for the color option we wanted and everything i read online says its the easiest to maintain, i just ordered it so i cant really tell you anything more than that right now

price wise granite was going to be like 50 bucks more, so i would say its pretty comparable

Re: Granite Vs. Silestone (sp?)

We chose granite for our kitchen counters - love them! Every day I see something new that I never noticed before. And basically no maintenance. Our fabricator put on a "permanent sealer". We've had them about two years now and I haven't had to seal them. DH leaves tomato sauce, olive oil, etc spills overnight and nothing has stained.

Most of the granite slabs we saw were much more interesting to me than the silestone. I like the variation of granite instead of the consistency of silestone.

To me Silestone is a lot less shiny looking than granite
And you can also get granite that is just as maintainance free as silestone- meaning it has permashield and NEVER needs sealing.
Home Depot sells that kind of granite.

I have found that all of the Zodiaq and Silestone derivatives are priced similar to granite. They definitely aren't cheap.

I'd say Zodiaq is more expensive than Silestone because of the DuPont name.

This is my companies granite, we are partnered with THD and can only sell through them. You never have to seal it and it's warrantied as well.

Oh that's funny. I have to say it truly is the best. I was very impressed with the whole operation when I went down to look at a sample slab.
And my granite is amazing and never needs to be sealed.
It may be a bit more money, but totally worth it IMO

Re: Granite Vs. Silestone (sp?)

My ILs have this in their kitchen. It looks a lot like granite to me. It is not a single color, but has a pattern like granite if that makes any sense. They got it because it was less maintenance than granite although they had a hell of a time with the company Silestone and the installation. (Many issues, but that can happen with any company on a bad day.) Overall they're happy with it.

I think this is what we have too (the previous owners put it in) and people all the time say the same thing about it being granite! I love it and it has a great shine to it.

Re: Granite Vs. Silestone (sp?)

We were gooing back and forth between the 2 and ended up going with the sliestone stellar night because we just liked the sparkle better than the black granits. I think they are pretty comparable with price and how they hold up. We have never had any problems.
