The problem with testers (yes I DO have a very nice multimeter that I COULD use...
  ) is that it's never on you when you want to test the battery. My tongue is always in the same spot, so it's very easy to get. My tester is all the way in the basement....

So funny, I just had this conversation with my DH a few days ago (daylight savings time battery changing brought it up)
I have, because one of my brothers dared me to as a kid. I think this is the reason I did a lot of things as a kid.

Now I give it to my husband and he uses his multi-meter to see if it has juice!
 Smart folks! I do the same.
It's simple. Set it on DC volts. Black lead to negative terminal, red to positive. If the battery reads on or close to 9 volts it's good. AA, AAA, D, or C batteries should read about 1.5 volts. This is much easier and safer than tazing your tongue!

But by the time it takes to go from my 2nd floor down to the basement to get the meter, then test it, and run all the way back up to the 2nd floor, I could just test it with my tongue, put it back, and be eating cookies by then....
