Similac Isomil

Our pediatrician put James on Similac Isomil today because he's had a little stomach bug with diarrhea for the past few days. My poor little guys butt is so red and rashy and he's been a TOTAL crankpot. DH and I are beyond exhausted from dealing with him. He's either asleep or screaming . This is SOOOOOO not my child.

The ped said that he might have a little sensitivity to the milk-based formula that we had him on - DH and I are both severely lactose intolerant and apparently it can affect the baby... He put James on the Similac Isomil for a few days to see how he does on it and to hopefully get his diarrhea under control.

If your DC was on this formula, how was their reaction when you first tired it out? James seems to like it so far - he sucks it down like it's nothing. I've been reading that it can cause constipation, though - I'd hate to throw another discomforting thing at him right now.

My daughter has been on isomil for about 1 month after having changed formulas 4 times due to severe gas and colic. At first she did not have any problems but once her digestive system adjusted to the formula she did get constipated. The doctor told me to keep her on the isomil and supplement one feeding with water to help with the constipation. This has helped a tremendous amount. I too am lactose intolerant and so is my husband so I would not chance trying her on another formula. I was also told that I can give her 1 oz of prune juice with 1 oz of water but it can cause gas so we decided no to. I have also made her bottles on the light side this also helps. i went with my own gut and changed emma to soy about 2 months in and even my doc said we did the right thing. he told us he doesn't think she has an 'allergy' to milk, but likely a sensitivity...

i don't think emma's constipated at ALL on this!! she's been on it for about 3 months now and i'd say goes maybe once a day if not once every 2 days!

My DS has a milk protein sensitivity, and he was miserable on the Isomil as well. I read that 60% of babies with milk protein allergies are also allergic to soy. I just went dairy free and continued to breast feed after trying Isomil and Alimentum...DS was a mess on both.

Hopefully your DS does good on it, but just be aware that he could be sensitive to soy as well.

Logan was on it for 3 weeks- the similac sensitive wasn't working for his gassiness at that point, so we tried the soy. It definitely constipated him - that's ultimately why we took him off. He was only going once every 2 days and when he DID go, he strained for over an hour and it was always a little rock-hard pebble, not 2 days worth of poop like it should have been. And don't be alarmed - it's normal for the formula, burps, farts, and poop to STINK from the soy. It's nasty!! After 3 weeks, I couldn't deal with his straining to poop, so we moved back to the sensitive and its been working well for him!

Several people on the boards are giving the isomil away if you need some - check out the buy/sell/swap thread. I don't have any left, otherwise I'd have brought it to you on Monday

I have two 12.9oz cans of Similac Isomil Advanced (powder) if you want it



(they were samples from my hospital but we use Good Start)

Thanks girls!

He seems to be feeling better today - he hasn't cried yet and he's been up since 7:30 - I guess that's a good thing, right?

He hasn't pooped since we started with the soy (yesterday's lunchtime feeding) - he normally poops at least once overnight. I guess we'll have to see how it goes.

DD has been on soy formula since she was a few weeks old. Similac Advance and Similac Sensitive both upset her stomach. She was a completely different baby on Similac Isomil. It definitely did constipate her in the beginning, but when she got REALLY bad, we would use a little prune juice to help her along. Her body eventually adjusted to it and she became regular. She's now almost 8 months and this past month, we are slowly introducing regular milk based formula without any issues. GL
