For the bird watchers...
Terrible pic, sorry. I need a new lens. I was only like 10 feet away. I heard a ruckus in my driveway, like rustling leaves & squirrels fighting, you now that noise they make so I ran out to investigate...
He's still standing there with the squirrel in his talons. It's been at least 15 minutes. I'm torn between being upset about the squirrel & being in love with this hawk!

I totally appreciate the beauty of the hawks and I think its amazing that their population is thriving on LI now, but they are such a huge threat to my chickens! So I'm always horrified when I see them in the sky anywhere near my neighborhood Great pic though!

Wow, that is one beautiful bird! I've never seen a red tailed hawk around here, only a Coopers that snatched a Mourning Dove from my feeder.
Great shot, Kitty!

Nice Shot! We had a Red Shouldered Hawk in our backyard this AM, I didn't get any pics though. Luckily it stuck around long enough for me to consult my Sibley's bird guide cause my hawk ID skills are awful!

one actually dive-bombed DHs head going for a bird or a squirrel.
my parents just had their fish, red-lips, stolen from their pond and left for den on their patio....
mom and dad say that their are no "fish hawks" on long island. i beg to differ...

Great shot! I love birds of prey (even with feeling bad about the squirrel). The red tails have made such a HUGE comeback over the last 10 years. It's great.

An Osprey will eat other animals but primarily, they're close to the shore and catch fish:
Since DDT was banned and they put up nest platforms for them, they're making a comeback on Long Island in a major way.
There are a lot of animals that would go fishing in a backyard pond though!
