First Thing
What's the first thing you did when you entered your new home with your new set of keys after closing??
We are waiting for our closing date and can't stop thinking about running thru all the rooms!!

Re: First Thing
The first thing we did was to get lunch. We were starving after the walk-thru and closing. Then, we went back to our apartment and went to Orlando for a few days.
We didn't set foot into the house until over a week after closing and when we did, we started demo'ing. We moved in two months later.

Re: First Thing
We changed the locks. We didn't trust the previous owners. Than we went thru each room and started writing down what we needed to do.
But 4 months later when we moved in we toasted and had a nice dinner.

Re: First Thing
popped the champagne, ran all thru the house yelling like crazy and then put up blinds so people couldn't tell the house was empty (we were doing work there for a month before moving in)

Re: First Thing
On the way to the house from our closing I stopped at our apartment and picked up our dog & a bottle of champagne and some pint glasses that were our rehearsal dinner favors (we actually wanted our wedding toasting flutes but they were still at my parents house) and DH stopped at the pizza place and picked up subs, we met at the house (all locations were about 5 min apart) and opened the door together, took Ali (our dog) in to hang out and had lunch and champagne. Then DH had to go back to work (he just met me at lunch for the closing, I took the whole day off), I brought the dog back to the apt and finished packing!

Re: First Thing
DH waited for the locksmith while I ran to DMV - my OOS drivers license was expiring two days later and now that I had an official address I needed to get a new drivers license before the old one expired! When I got back we jumped in the car and headed back to MA to finish packing up the apt. Movers came 2 day later, we headed back to NY to do as much cleaning as we could before the movers arrived the next morning. Needless to say, it was hectic and less than ideal trying to cram everying into a really tight timeframe.

Re: First Thing
in my last house we did the toilet seats and the locks first thing.. and cleaned. i can still smell the bleach in my nose... five and half years later!
i don't know what i will do first this go-round. these sellers are clean! i guess the toilet and locks are customary... other than that... clean my way and steam clean the better rugs. (we are hiring a professional to do this)

Re: First Thing
This was it literally:
DH carried me over the threshhold, we popped open a bottle of champagne, toasted, kissed, I set the self-cleaning oven and then we went to home depot to get new toilet seats!

Re: First Thing
when we close dh most likely will just go to closing and back to work (busy season for him) so i will be going to the house alone and probably doing measurements, more detail pictures and having my father come in to help me figure out a good plan. The next day is taking down wood paneling, tearing up carpets and getting an electrician in for prices to do a panel upgrade and wiring.
After the carpets are out, paneling is down, we are putting a doorway up and hopefully have the wiring done and having a floor person come in. After that is done then we are changing the locks, toilet seats full cleaning and then moving in. Oh and smoke alarms since we have none currently!
If we can paint that would be great (before moving in) if not that is right after and then settling in and working on the next projects: laundry room, then updating bathroom 1 and then some furniture for the living room at least by early next year.
The following years are exterior work, kitchen and master bedroom/bathroom which we maybe able to do that along with the bath ren mid next year since we are doing all the labor ourselves.
But as you see important things are first: electric if you need upgrades/wiring, alarms, flooring, painting - heat/water?, now its winter so winterize the exterior.
