Painting
I have a side by side split, so the hallway where the bedrooms are overlook the living room. Do I paint that hallway the same color as the living room? I am thinking it may be too much color if I don't...

I don't understand where the break is, can you post pictures?
if its a wall that bends away you can do different colors.
you can also add a piece of trim moulding to seperate the space and use different colors on each side if its a straight wall

well you walk up like 5 steps to the hallway, and the hallway overlooks the living room from up there. You look down into the living room from the hallway

Not sure if I understand where the wall is? Do you have a pic?
But I think you could paint it another color if it compliments the LR color. Or you could pick a color for the LR and than one or two lighter or darker from the LR on the paint chip.
