Sort of PR, maybe TMI - contraceptive question other than the pill

Sorry to pry, but my options are limited. I can't take birth control pills due to health problems beyond my control (clotting). In the past we've "ended the party early" routine, but we want to be more certain we don't get pregnant again for a while.

I was placing a drug store order when I noticed the sponge is on the market. I was just wondering other than condoms and obviously the pill, what some other RELIABLE, HORMONE FREE non-permanent methods are available. I will reiterate, must be hormone free b/c of my clotting issue, I think some IUD's have hormone. Anyone have experience with sponges? TIA

No experience with the sponge. I can't take anything hormonal also due to clotting issues (Protein S deficient), so we use condoms. We don't like them but I'm too nervous to try anything else.

I'm with you on both... too nervous about other options basically b/c of lack of experience with anything else and I have Protein S deficiency, Factor IV leiden and Prothrombin mutations. Fortunately, only one strand of each, but still basically a clot waiting to happen. The lamb skin condoms seem ok, I know DH isn't too happy but he witnessed me on the pill having basically mini-strokes (before we knew I had such messed up blood) so we deal. Just wondering if there was anything else. I wish I could make up my mind about a third child or not... if I knew I was done I'd probably just have some permanent method done.

although I was under the impression that I could not have ANY hormones due to MTHFR (clotting issue - BUT I have never had a clot or anything), my OB said I could use an IUD (which has progesterone only - he said I cannot have estrogen which is in the BCP)

I plan to discuss this with my hematologist next week to see if this is safe for me

I think I used a sponge ONCE when I was like 17...what a horror story (I had no idea how to get it out Chat Icon Chat Icon )

My ob said that the copper IUD is hormone free but not as effective Chat Icon not really sure about that though

OMG - so funny, I was concerned about how you get a sponge out too.

Did not know that about the copper IUD. I would like something pretty effective though. I just had my second c-section within 2 years! My kids are only 14 months apart, I really want to give my body a break and time to decide if 2 is enough and 3 is a crowd or if I get baby-fever when they are 4 and 3 or something. Granted I'll be 39! I may just want my sleep at that point in my life.

Once I get AF, I'm having the Paraguard IUD put in. It's non-hormonal (which was a must for me as well).

Definitely ask your doctor about this one. It's good for 10 years. Chat Icon

yes, this is the copper one I referred to, my OB just did not personally think it worked as well, not really sure why
