putting a TV above the fireplace
we have a fairly decent-sized mantle above the fireplace:
we're getting a TV this week, probably 46 inches.
can we get away with having it on the TV stand? i know we'll probably have a hard time installing it since the brick goes all the way to the ceiling and i don't want to worry about it now.

Re: putting a TV above the fireplace
are you planning on using the fireplace- Dh had told me that the heat is not good for the tv- thats the only thing that I would be concerned about

Re: putting a TV above the fireplace
As long as the mantle can hold the weight of the TV - and those flat screens are deceiving... they are VERY heavy. We didn't want to risk it not knowing how the mantle was attached to our fireplace we Chris was able to mount it himself with brackets on the fireplace and it looks great - boy I hope you don't ask me HOW he did it because I wasn't home

Re: putting a TV above the fireplace
if you use the fireplace, you shouldn't put it above it.
IMO your mantel is very high and the chairs are going to be a little close. your really going to have to look up to view the tv from their. Is there anywhere else you can put it? or is it possible to lower the mantel? are the bricks built around it?
You also void the warranty on the TV if you ever need it repaired and they see it up there, or if they install it for you.

yes, we can lower the mantle - it's attached on top of the brick. i never even thought about that!
i'm not a fan of putting it about the fireplace, but DH is kind of set on that. we can also put it on the far wall, where DS's toys will be (next to the sliding glass doors). but they we would have to turn the chairs to see.

Its such a man thing
either way, your going to have an outlet put near there if there isn't one already, also a cable line run over there, which isn't a big deal. you will probably have to put holes in the brick to secure the brackets as well. something to think about long term. where would you put the cable box? (in the case you use one)

gas only.
Some people do it anyway, but if you read your warranty to the tv they say you can't or your void it. the bricks do get warm when in use so its really not recommended. Considering what TV's cost, IMO I wouldn't do it, or I wouldn't use the fireplace.

Re: putting a TV above the fireplace
I have asked dozens of people on this and home theater installers suggest putting some thermometers (like a meat thermometer) over it while you have a fire going. Also, the mantle will displace some of the heat. Most of the brick is just asthetics, so they don't get hot from the chimney.
We did a test with thermometers and it was fine. We are mounting it to the brick as well (we have the exact same fireplace) We are using some kind of concrete sleeve to attach the TV mount. In your case you may want to get a mount where you can tilt the TV down towards the chairs, so it's not so high and a strain on the neck over time.
DH is going to do the install this weekend, I'll let you know how it goes. Oh and we lowered our mantle too, it was easy breezy! Oh and we got the Samsung LED and it is SO light, but I still wouldn't let it just sit on the mantle.

Re: putting a TV above the fireplace
yea dh does not want to put the tv over our fireplace because he thinks it takes away from it and the fact we have front vents that pump hot air out it wouldn't be smart since we do plan on using it a lot once we get in the house.
I am ticked off because i think it would look great! I guess do the thermometer test that might help

Re: putting a TV above the fireplace
You can probably do it as long as it's far enough away from the heat.
I personally would never mount a TV above a fireplace because it would be way too high for my taste. TVs are made to be placed eye level. If the TV was above the fireplace, i'd feel like I am constantly "looking up", it would almost be straining.

Yes that can definitely work. The plasma I have in my bedroom is hung very high. But that is because I watch it while I am laying down. "eye level" when my head is on my pillow is about 7 feet off the ground.
But in a living room, if it's just a standard sofa setup I like it low. Like eye level.
The LCD I have in my living room is only a couple of feet off the ground, and I still think it's too low since the middle of the TV is not perfectly centered to my eye level. I would have adjusted it down about 8 inches if I wasn't moving.
