This is exactly why we're not supposed to know what others make Chat Icon Chat Icon

My coworker disclosed what some of our other coworkers are making, and they are definitely making more than me.

Now, seniority is moot because some people have only been here 8 months longer than me (my dept. has only been here 1 1/2 years), a guy who was hired 2 months ago is even making more than me.

Whats pisssing me off to no end is the fact that I am the #1 in the department; every month at my review I am at the top in every division. I met my YEARLY GOAL in terms of workload back in August. I am days, if not weeks/months ahead of these coworkers in terms of workload. Every single thing that is asked of me, I do it.

I cannot even comprehend that these people are making more than me are the biggest bunch of lazy sacks you could ever meet, and I have brought this to management's attention. The thought that these lazy asssses are making more than me while I pick up the slack (they always say, "Oh I don't need to do this, Heather's a machine Chat Icon ) has me FUMING.

I know I can't really say anything because I'm not supposed to know. I will probably have to wait till raises in March (a whole whopping 15 cents last year Chat Icon ).

Is there ANYTHING I can do? Any possible way I can bring this up to management, without disclosing I know what others are making?

You are just about at the mid way point between salary reviews, can you set up a meeting to discuss this with your boss? Ask to have your salary re-evaluated.

Prepare a list of all your responsibilities - especially if anything has to do with directing other people. Point out your high review marks, anything you do that saves the company money or make things more efficient.

In this meeting, you don't really want to put other people's work down but if there is work you absorbed from other people (regardleess of the reason) make sure they know about it.

Is it a matter of you didn't ask for as much as they did when you took the job/got the promotion?
This happened to DH and while yes, it sucks, there isn't really much he can do about it.

Ask for a raise. It's a simple as that.

That's really all you can do without disclosing what you think you know. I say that because you don't have any way to verify what these people are actually making. What you "know" is what someone else claims these people make (or claims these people told her that is what they make).

Last time I checked, companies are for-profit businesses. They want to get the best labor as inexpensively as possible. That's why employees should be making sure their compensation is in line with their performance and experience (and experience does not necessarily only mean experience at that particular company).

A few years ago, my DH realized he was being grossly underpaid and got a more than 50% (yes, FIFTY - five zero) raise in the middle of the year effective immediately. He was, however, prepared to walk away to a different job if they didn't give it to him. (He had a job lined up at the salary he wanted. He stayed at his job because he got more money from them and additional educational perks.) If you know what you are really worth, then ask for it... but I wouldn't get upset that your company just didn't automatically throw money your way. You need to be your own best advocate. If you know what you're really worth, then ask for it -- and it doesn't matter that it's mid-year.

Just don't take it personally and don't get offended by all this. It's not personal and it's not an attack against you. This is not a phenomenon unique to your company. It happens everywhere. Chat Icon If you're as good as you say and underpaid, I am sure you'll be able to negotiate a good raise. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks everyone!

I was offered what I thought was a good salary for the work I do, I am also inexperienced in that arena and didn't think to negotiate.

If I hadn't overheard someone saying "I wouldn't do this job if they were paying me what they pay Heather" Chat Icon I'd have been content working 2 damn jobs and working my way up in the company.

I'm not prepared to walk away, I don't want this to become a war negotiation Chat Icon My achievements/ability are WELL KNOWN in the office, people depend on me to carry them.

I would be content with what I make if I didn't know these lazy sacks were making more Chat Icon

I agree. Don't mention what other people make in the meeting. It's about you & your performance. If you need to discuss it, do it in vague terms as "market value".

If you want more money, you need to ask for it. I remember my co-worker was transferred from the UK. She was furious to find out a collegue had the perks of relocation money, additional vacation time, etc. When she talked to me about it, I asked if she negotiated the move. She didn't. He did.

Thanks Barb...I know I can't really be upset with what I accepted. I am gonna sit on this for a while, maybe wait till we get our raises in March and then ask for a raise.

I work for an agency that I have learned they negotiate pay based on what you ask for at the interview. One of my friend's at work is in a situation now where she can't ask for more money because she came in to the position very inexperienced, agreed to a lower salary, was told she'd get a raise at X date but never got that in writing, and now the company is not really giving raises because "of the economy". She has negotiated however to get paid seperately for certain projects she agrees to take on.

Budgets for increases are usually decided well beforehand. I would discuss what your expectations are beforehand.

When I asked for an increase, I printed out the market value of the several hats I wore before I went in. I didn't present it as a "I'm going to walk if I don't get a raise." but that I know increases are discussed early & wanted you to consider the fact that I am below market.

Another thing to consider is that depending how your company is doing, it may not be feasible to make a salary adjustment to what others are making if it's a big jump. There are years that we have a capped increase unless the VP is willing to go to the President to discuss an individual.

What if you did a little research on your job out in the market place. check salary.com, check job boards, perhaps call a recruiter pretending to look for a job and find out what the going rate is. Then when you sit with your boss you can say that you did research and it seems that for someone with your experience and level that you should be making in the X range (give him a range, don't say an exact number because that's not realistic). Better yet, if you have a friend in Human Resources (not necessarily in your company) ask if they have access to salary market data and if they do, ask if they could look up your job for you.

ETA - if you've been with the company a while, your salary might be lagging due to that. You said a new person came in making more. My guess is that they were making more wherever they were before and that is the salary the company needed to offer the individual to get him on board.

This happened to me in the beginning of this month! I was so upset that I applied for another job and got the job within a week!!!! I didn't want to deal with management and asking for a raise so I did what was best for my career and my future....the new job has much better hours and huge increase in salary Chat Icon my advice is that if you don't want to ask for a salary increase, just look for a way out!
