Our Den - updated 10/24
so this is our den:
it's completely empty now.
Update 10/21:
so we broke the bank and got the furniture we LOVED
two of these -

plus this table to go in between:
we also got this table for our living room:

now all we have to get is a large shelving/storage unit for that wall and some decorations!
ETF: wrong living room table
Update 10/24/09:
so we went to Ikea last night and i think this is what we are getting;
and 2 of these for either side:
next step - table and chairs for DS

Re: need major help furnishing and decorating den
i like your idea. I would put some sort of long thin console table with a large picture or mirror above it on that long wall. you can use it for storage of DS toys

that's what i was thinking, but then i saw pics of larger storage pieces with shelving and drawers, but i think it might stick out too much...

or maybe this would be better

Re: need major help furnishing and decorating den
This cabinet from pottery might work (or something similar) - it is only 14 inches wide...
or
How wide is the room? Is there enough room to divide the space with a couch to create a hallway.

I don't think this would stick out more than the couch you had in there did. How did that work out? If the couch wasn't in the way, I don't think the storage unit would be either.

unfortunately no - because otherwise it would be too close to the fireplace. also, the doorway to the room (not the one to the hallway) is really, really big and it would be blocked by a couch.

I LOVE both of these!! the first one is beautiful!! but the second is great to! I really don't think its all that deep, I bet its less then the sofa they had there, it looked wide. either way as long as you leave 36" to get "by" the piece into the hallway your good

Re: need major help furnishing and decorating den
I say put the 2 leather couches and a table on the long wall (so not so close to the fireplace) and leave open space in that area.
As for the door you mentioned going into the den, if it is so big, can you take the door out completely and frame the doorway so it is more open?

there is no door - only a doorway. and there's a second doorway right next to it that goes into the kitchen. it's so annoying
we could do a couch there but the long wall ends before the fireplace starts, so then there won't be anything in front of the fireplace (which i do want). and if we do chairs too, there won't be room to walk.
i know i am making no sense, this room makes no sense

ok so I'm at work an its hard to do this with Paint lol but here's what I think your room looks like and what you have in mind.
If it is, i think it could work great!
ETA: i thought you wanted to put a table and chairs set for your DS on right most wall and store toys in the cabinet on long wall

IMAGE wow you are good! this is exactly the room we have - the only difference is there is another doorway to the kitchen just to the left of the chairs, but behind them, does that make sense? it wouldn't interfere with the placement of the chairs at all.
i can't wait to show this to DH! this is exactly how i want it set up - with a low credenza on that long wall and them DS's toys to the right of the sliding glass door.
i just re-read your ETA - that would be awesome! a table and chairs next to his Elmo kitchen and the toys all stored in the cabinet on the long wall. yes! perfect!

so this is our den:
IMAGE
IMAGE
it's completely empty now.
when you walk into the room (1st pic) the fireplace is in front of you, with a sliding glass door to the backyard on the right side.
to the right of the sliding door is a wall (2nd pic) and the hallway to the bedrooms.
in the 2nd pic you can also see a long wall (used to have a couch) leading up to the hallway to the bedrooms.
because the room leads to the bedrooms we are having trouble furnishing and decorating it. (it acts as both a den and a hallway)
what i want to do is get 2 leather chairs and a small table to put in front of the fireplace, and put DS's toys on the short wall next to the sliding glass doors...
but what do i do with the long wall in the back of the room?
any ideas?

check penneys, the have storage units that you can customize at really reasonable prices.

I like all the furniture and the storage unit! But I am unsure about the color of the storage unit.
If you bring in off-white pillows for the chairs, and maybe off-white curtains for the sliding door, I think it will work!

I totally agree. You can have brown furniture and off white furniture in the same room. You just need to keep everything simple. The pillows, curtains and even decor in an off white color would bring the room together I think. GL!

you can def. use all the colors, but personally I'm not loving that piece sorry just trying to be honest. I think its just way to casual, more of a bedroom or playroom piece. And the chairs you have set a good tone
