Re: getting water out of carpet
A wet / dry shop vac works great! DH's office had a hot water heater leak and the carpet of soaked. Of course it happened when he was out of town so I had to go take care of the problem but the shop vac sucked out all the water - the carpet was just slightly damp when I was done, and it dried out without any problems.
If you don't have one I would get towels and put them down then walk on them to soak up water. Keep doing it until with dry towels until you can't soak up any more. Just pressing won't help get to the water down deep - the walking will help, but you really are best off suctioning it out with a wet dry vac if you can.

shop vac is the best for it and then i'd try to blot out the rest and put a fan on it asap.

steam vac as in steam cleaner vacuum? it might work. there should be a button or something that lets you suck up the cleaning solution you sprayed down. if that's what you have, give it a try.

Actually, all a steam vac does is pull water out of carpet.... it also lets you spray water on the carpet in the first place, but it's main purpose is to very effectively and thoroughly pull water out of carpet.
Since it's isn't designed to pick up spills, you will have to empty the canister quite a bit, but it will definitely work very well.
