grieving taxes
Hi, can anyone recommend a service they have used in nassau county to grieve their taxes.
We get those postcards all the time, but they never seem accurate with our information. Because of that it makes me feel skeptical that its a scam or something.
Also, what was your outcome when you grieved them, successful or not?
Thanks

Re: grieving taxes
I would also like to know, if you have grieved them yourself, what steps you took to do so? I want to try and do and don't know where to begin?

Re: grieving taxes
Please please please use an attorney to grieve your taxes - not a "tax reduction agency."
I can FM you several reputable law firms that do this type of work. Let me know if you'd like the names.

Re: grieving taxes
Any particular reason for using an attorney rather than an agency?
I am just imagining that an attorney will cost much more to do this.

An attorney will charge you the same amount as a tax reduction service (sometimes less). The fee for hiring an attorney to do this is normally 50 percent of the tax refund or tax savings achieved. In addition, there is a $30 state mandated court filing fee.
You only pay if you are successful.
I've seen some instances where tax reduction agencies charge 100 percent.
As for the benefits of using an attorney over a service, my opinion is this: if you needed surgery, you would see a surgeon, not a general practicioner, right? If you are paying the same amount (sometimes less), wouldn't you want the best legal advice you could get?
Regardless of what the tax reduction agencies would like you to think, this is a Court proceeding. They are able to represent you because you don't NEED to be a lawyer to represent another person in Small Claims Court. However, in regular court (Supreme or District) you do need to be an attorney to represent someone.
In addition to your appraised value, there are many other legal issues that could affect your property taxes. These issues cannot be resolved in small claims court. In the event these issues arise in your claim, you will have to hire an attorney any way.
