Re: the deadbeat former owners of our house..

THanks everyone for your input.

i'm definitely not going to go to her house - i don't want her to know that we opened any of her mail!

next time a bill comes for them, i'll bring it to the post office and see about filing a mail fraud claim - then at least something will be on record and it's the now up to the post office to get the delivery right.

you're right.. bill collectors will find them no matter what!

Ugh, that's terrible. Go to the post office and fill out a change of address form.

You mean OP should fill it out for the previous owner? She can't do that, you have to provide ID I believe.

Yes that's what I meant and I didn't know that.

To the OP-Sorry to have given you the wrong info. Chat Icon Good Luck!

Turns out its a bill for a visit that took place last month. The woman STILL is giving out our address as hers!!

What do you think i should do?
any suggestions?

I dont think that means she is still giving out your address. She may have been a patient at that hospital before and may have just not thought to update her info.

QUOTE]

Actually hospitals DO ask for your information and to verify it is correct. She IS misleading the hospital.

I had a c-section when I delivered my son and my son was admitted in the ER also. Everytime I was asked for my insurance card and to verify that my information in their system was correct.

just put return to sender. stop opening their mail, it's illegal. and don't give out their new address. If they get mad, you don't want any issues.

Re: the deadbeat former owners of our house..

We've lived in our house for 7 years now and still get occasional stuff from the old owners. Mostly some financial stuff from the ex husband and bills to the scumbag guy the ex wife had hooked up with. Just a month ago a collections guy from the bank showed up - looking for her daughter! Trying to track her down regarding a past due car loan! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

the previous owner of our home worked at Circuit city as a second job and and we stuff addressed to him regularly. I know when circuit city closed they were having trouble resolving some 401K or other accounts because they couldn't locate all of the former employees.
I have written return to sender on every envelop, i have even taken then to the PO to tell them in person. 5 years have gone by and we still get them.

I opened it because i had been to this same ER myself earlier this summer and thought it was for me.

I don't understand this...was your name on the envelope? Why would you think it was for you unless it was addressed to you? It's illegal to open someone else's mail.

However, with that said, I am in my house 4 years, the previous owners also moved a couple of blocks away and we STILL get mail for them. Not just junk mail either. Now, anything that I see that is addressed to them, I just toss. I used to write "moved Aug 2005, no longer at this address" but would you believe the same piece of mail would make it's way back to us? After 4 years, and still getting Xmas cards and such, you would think they would tell people their new address. Into the garbage it goes with the rest of our junk mail.

The garbage man doesn't know who lives in my house and who doesn't.

Also, the mailcarrier is not supposed to leave someone else's mail in your mailbox either.

Jeez, it was an honest mistake in this case. No, my name wasn't on the envelope, which i realized when i opened it and saw a different name.
The reason i didn't think twice about the name on it was because it was from the ER care center that i had been to - so i had no reason to think it was anything other than mine.
i'm not stupid and i don't appreciate the tone.

I do know its illegal to open someone else's mail - which is why i'm going to make sure we don't do it again. I had originally thought to prevent mail from coming to our house by contacting the people who were sending the past due bills. I realize now that i'm opening myself up for potential liability by doing that, so i won't do it anymore.

From now on, i'm writing the forwarding address on any mail we get, and i'm going to the post office to see about filing a mail fraud claim - because despite the fact that she 'may' have made an honest mistake when going to the hospital and not updated her address - i don't believe that. When i was there, i was asked repeatedly if my insurance information was the same, my address was repeated back to me many times for verification etc. So i know she willfully didn't update the address.

Well, if the mailcarrier/post office were doing their jobs correctly, we wouldn't have this problem would we?

I've repeatedly gone to the post office and told them not to deliver anything to our house with that name on it, i've even put a note on the inside of our mailbox so the mail carrier sees it when he puts the mail in.
Clearly, they're still delivering mail with the former owners name on it - so i'm going to see about filing for mail fraud. I don't know what the criteria is for that, but i'll find out.

There was no "tone" I was asking a simple question, no need to get nasty....

I guess I was confused since I always look at who the envelope is addressed to before opening, and was wondering how opening someone else's mail by accident, was an accident.

it's not uncommon for someone to assume the mail in their mailbox is indeed for them, especially if the logo on the envelope is from a familiar location.
I did take your 'simple question' as rather condescending. if it wasn't intended that way, then you should know that it came across that way.

lets be done with this now ok? it's so not worth it

I've done it. Esp. when we first moved into our new apt. and were constantly getting mailing for the previous tenant. I never expect to get mail other than my own, so I don't usually inspect the mail that I'm opening to make sure it's mine. I do now, because several months later, I'm still getting stuff for these people (and not junk mail).

I would do what others have suggested and just go down to the PO to claim some sort of mail fraud what-have-you.

Good luck!

I did it also- I assume the mail in my mailbox that I have to open with a key is MINE

I saw DMV and I panicked

it wasn't for me

oh well...not my problem- forward your mail, change you address on your Lic...

I once opened a letter that was in my PO box and not for me- I handed it to the postal worker- they did not call the police or the FBI...its a simple mistake- it's not like she opened a credit card in there name and went on a shopping spree

excuse me for assuming mail in the po box I pay for and at the apartment I rent is mine Chat Icon

I used to get someone else's mail in my apartment mailbox too that I had to open with a key. I had the "same" address as a house on the same street as the apartment complex. Heck, PSE&G even once turned off MY electricity instead of the other house for non payment of bills.

I guess I'm "different" then since I always look to see who the envelope is addressed to. Chat Icon Heck, I don't even open DH's mail...we work for the same company and both get mail that has the same logo on it...

well mistakes happen...no else gets mail at my house or PO box - so why should I have to check each thing before opening???? I assume it's for me- I don't see why that's a big deal????

and I don't see the big deal of making a mistake once or twice - realzing it and then never doing it again...no one opened the other person mail on purpose and like I said I was not arrested at the PO when I turned in the letter I opened by mistake- nor would I be upset if the person in the box next to mine did the same thing by accident...stuff happens- I seriously could care less- unless they steal personal info

I am not a mail man- if you put mail in my box- and I am not paying attention- I might open it

now it's from a company I know I don't deal with- chances are I wouldn't

but sorry seeing the DMV sent me into a panic- and I opened the letter with out looking- I am sure if you had to deal with some of the things that I have had to deal with in the last year- you might understand why that would scare the crap out of me- be thankful you don't Chat Icon

I'm not even sure why I'm the one getting beat up here.... I asked a simple question and got jumped all over. From how I interpreted the OP's post is that it wasn't the first piece of mail she opened (otherwise how else would she know the bills they receive are past due bills).

I'm sorry for what you have gone through this past year. I've gone through some rather tramatic things in the past 18 months, but that's not the point, I just don't post about my personal issues.

I really don't even know why this is an issue, I made a simple statement.

There are alot of worse things in a persons life then continuing to get someone elses' mail...Chat Icon

Re: the deadbeat former owners of our house..

You can GO to the post office, have your license and a bill with your name and address on it (maybe mortgage statment would work best) see the post master and have them take off the other names on your address. I had a problem with getting a previous owners mail, called the post office and that's what they told me to do. Return to sender is annoying, having to write it on every letter, every day.
