BFing mom...i have a cold!

BFing mom...i have a cold!

a bad sore throat and the stuffed nose/sniffles...is it OK for me to BFing/pumping for my DS? wont he get sick from me??? are there medicines that I can or cannot take? Chat Icon

It is actually best to keep breastfeeding as you will be passing the antibodies you are making onto him. Decongestants may cause a drop in supply while you are taking them, but I had a cold last week & needed Dayquil to even function to take care of the kids. No ill effects came of me taking it.

ITA. I've had a lot of colds since DS started daycare. I haven't taken anything b/c I was afraid of it affecting my supply. If you're really uncomfortable, check out kellymom.com for a list of safe medications to take.

I am nearly over my first cold of the season - sore throat, runny nose, coughing, swollen glands - you get the drift. I didnt take anything and my 2mth old didnt get it...yet! fingers crossed. I am EBF also.

ITA. I'm on my second cold since bringing DD home (gotta love DS bringing home the daycare germs)! BFing is the best thing you can do. Even if your little one does get sick, it won't be as bad as it could have been because of the antibodies. I took an occasional tylenol when I was sick and everything turned out okay.
