Questions about Registering..

How on earth did you guys know what to register for?? Like which stroller and what's a good price? and things like that?

Did you do all your research online first, then hit up the stores? I think I like the selection and setup of BBB rather than BRU. But, I don't know how to pick the right things..

Also, when did you start registering? I'm thinking I will wait until my 20 week so that I know to register for Chat Icon or Chat Icon . I am 14 weeks 2 days today.

Re: Questions about Registering..

I would ask on here, what kind of pack and play everyone wanted, what kind of stroller people liked.

We then went to the store and tried the items out. We also asked the sales people their opinions on items. If we saw someone with a certain stroller, I would ask them how they liked it, etc.

eta: Don't feel weird asking mommies how they like strollers in public. I've had lots of future mommies ask me questions while I was strolling DS. I am sure others don't mind giving some help.Chat Icon

Re: Questions about Registering..

well for me we are Chat Icon so i went around 18 weeks. I figured that most things will be used for another baby so i was going to do gender neutral anyway.

There were certain things I knew I wanted, like a stroller that converts to a carriage. I tried to do research, but it was too overwhelming for me (im definietly a hands-of shopper). We went to the store with a checklist and we compared prices there, looked at the quality and sturdiness, size, practicality, etc. There were very few things that i changed on the registry once we got home. I also reccommend going more than once and registering by section of the store...like one time do stroller, carseat, pack n play, basically the larger items, then do another one for clothes and toys, etc

It's funny you say that...my best friend is a 46 year old gay man..he knows nothing about babies and that stuff, but he's excited to be a "guncle". Anyway, he asks every single mom/dad/nanny with baby on the street questions. It's hysterical.

"Excuse me, where did you get that stroller? How much was it? Do you think it's worth it?" LOL

He insists I need a "Papoose" (his word) -like a baby carrier sling.

Some people look at us like we are crazy (which I can understand) I'm a 28 year old preggo with a 46 year old Obviously gay man walking around. We like to think that ppl think him & his rich lover paid me to have a baby!! Chat Icon Chat Icon since he's always asking the questions!

good advice, thanks!

I am also going to try and stay semi-gender neutral since you are right, it will probably be used for baby #2 down the line.

Re: Questions about Registering..

I definitely did my research first. I read a lot online, and also took a lot from this board (as well as asking lots of questions!).

When I saw products I liked I'd read the reviews (BRU is great for these), which also really helped me narrow things down a lot.

I made a preliminary list of products I was interested in, and then when I registered at 22 weeks, I took that time to really look and try things out (some stuff, like my stroller/car seat, I had looked/tried out before).

It's so exciting, though - enjoy it!

I did research online, on here Chat Icon, etc. I also found the book Baby Bargains to be very helpful also. Also, talk to other moms - they've been there and done that so usually have some helpful advice.

Once I got an idea of some of the big things we wanted/liked (stroller, high chair, pack n play, etc) we went to the stores to look at them and try them out.

We registered at 20 weeks.

ITA - I also consulted friends/family who were recent mommies and daddies and looked at posts here.

I feel Baby Bargains is a great starting point though.

Re: Questions about Registering..

I started around 14 1/2 weeks by looking at things and adding gender neutral big items (we are going to reuse for subsequent children).

As for strollers, I went to BBB (they let you play with everything!) and played with a whole bunch I thought were nice before settling on my two top runners (Baby City Mini and Bugaboo Bee)

As for everything else-Baby Bargains is great.

I would also x-post to parenting as so many mommies are very helpful!

I really liked the Baby Bargains book. If I was undecided about anything I asked the parenting board.

I also researched Consumer Reports. I wanted to know about safety ratings and convenience. I felt like the babies r us reviews could be so skewed. I felt like getting a general idea and then going to see the stuff in person, helped me more. Also, asking people I know rather than strangers who might have different needs, prioriities.

Re: Questions about Registering..

I also loved the baby bargains book! I don't know about BBB, but BRU website has a "categories" section that is set up like the registry list. I went through each section online, read the reviews for all the products I liked, sometimes organized by "most helpful" or "least favorable" just to see what problems to look out for. I made a list of my top choices for each category, then I went to the store to compare products in person. It was a great system in theory, but the problems are that 1) it took me like a MONTH of obsessive research. 2) they didn't have a lot of the choices I was looking for in the store, which made me feel limited. And 3) I became SO attached to the particular choices I made that if someone got me a different product, I was deeply disappointed. Since DS is still not here, I don't know if my obsessive research will ever pay off.
