question about lighting, who's a lighting expert ?
Im looking to buy the type of light that I can plug in, and then hang from a hook on the ceiling, above a desk area..
is that called a pendant light ? lantern ?
and a sconce requires wires to be moved behind the walls ?

A pendant is typically decorative and hardwired to a junction box in your ceiling. I am sure you can find a portable pendant but they are much less common.
When most people refer to a lantern, they are talking about outdoor lighting.
A sconce is typically hardwired to a junction box in a wall. You might see sconces in a bathroom on the sides of mirrors.
