Changing Window Sizes

Hi Again...need help trying to figure out what we will do. The house we put a bid in has really small windows in 3 rooms (bed rooms and den). We would like to change the windows in the bedrooms so there is more sunlight and more open feeling. We also want to add a larger one to the den as its part of the family room and want it to be more open here too with more sunlight.

Questions:
1. What is required when changing the window size (going larger) - we wouldn't need to do outside siding as we would be cutting into what's there, right? It would be more on the trimming inside and walls being destroyed and needing replacement (besides installing and getting the new window), right?

2. How much on average did you pay for installing and buying a new window?

Thanks for any feedback...

Re: Changing Window Sizes

i don't have any information for you, but wonder this myself. we are bidding on a house that has awful windows and would need replacement.
besides the small factor, the ease of getting out in case of a fire is more pertinent.

looking forward to replies...

Re: Changing Window Sizes

As part of our reno, we put bigger windows in the old half of the house (the existing windows weren't up to code since they were too small to escape during a fire).

They can do most of the cutting and reframing from the inside (you need to add the structure to hold the windows, so new 2x4s have to go into the walls). A good contractor shouldn't have to redo any siding (they may take it down to make things easier for the window install, but it should go right back again).

I don't have a cost, since it was part of a huge reno.
