saving money
we just bought a house & by some miracle we were able to still have a small savings left after closing. can anyone recommend a high interest savings account or short term cd to put some of it in? I was thinking of seeing a financial adviser but we really don't have enough $ to invest or do anything with so i thought I'd just ask around. But if someone does know of someone who is willing to give advice even if you don't have a ton of $ i would appreciate that information also. Thanks !

Re: saving money
High interest savings are gone right now due to the economy. The highest I have seen is like 2.3 %, we have ING and I think it's currently at 1.7% or something like that

Re: saving money
interest rates suuuck right now. We have an ING account and even that sucks, it's like 1. something %...where as when we opened it was like 5%....so for right now, i'd do ING and when things get better look into something else.

Re: saving money
I think I got 2% at citi bank
but I have a citi gold account since I do my business banking with them
BUT...first year of homeownership...I would want the money accessible- you never know what is going to come up!

ITA.
I would not lock into a CD unless you get a no penalty one. That would mean that most likely you would lose on the interest.
I would get the highest saving rate without locking the money.
ING is usually a good one but banks are tyring to stay competitive so shop around.

Re: saving money
Just open an out of state reward checking account.
They will give you 4% interest up to 25k. All you have to do is do direct deposit (if you can split your direct deposit at your job between a number of banks you can just send them a portion). You also just have to make 13 debit card transactions a month and get your statements electronically.
Can't beat 4%. Money is liquid so you can pull at any time.
Oh and they refund you all ATM fees. Not only do they not charge you any ATM fees, you can go to any ATM at ANY bank and not pay an atm fee.
If you put your card into a citibank ATM, the ATM says it will charge you $3 to pull money. Well the rewards checking bank will refund this money back into your account at the end of the month.
Here is one I bank with. I have others too if you have more than 25k.

Re: saving money
Just a thought....
You may want to wait a month or two before you put the $ in an acct. It's likely that you'll need to purchase "stuff" for the house and all of that "stuff" adds up.
We thought we'd have 4 left over but I was very clueless how much things like paint cost, so we're spending more than we planned.

This is what I would do...but it doesn't have to be out of state. There are places on LI that offer 4% on checking accounts like this. The $ is all liquid.

I am not familiar with any banks in LI that offer 4%. Can you share one? I need to open up another account. Thanks.
