Movers damaging/losing furniture
We had a bad experience with our movers (which is enough for a seperate post) but they clearly dropped (you can see the scuff) and cracked our crib in a spot that really can't be repaired and it makes a sharp edge on the interior of the crib making it dangerous. i know they're insured but how does it work? do they give you the full value of the item or is it capped? we basically need to replace the crib for the cost that we bought it ($700 not incl delivery and tax) and I'm praying we get fully reimbursed because I need this expense like I need a hole in my head right now. It really rubs me the wrong way that the movers reassembled the crib and definitely noticed it but didn't point it out. And they also broke a lamp, scuffed up my floors and we're completely missing a box!
Please share your experiences resolving issues with your moving company! I already faxed them a detailed letter yesterday outlining everything.

Re: Movers damaging/losing furniture
most likely, they will not cover the full replacement value of the piece. i think my moving company would only pay a certain amount per weight of the piece.
they will probably try to offer to fix the piece for you.

Re: Movers damaging/losing furniture
Dont u just hate that this happened.. what a pain in the @$$. Keep on their backs. they will try to dance rings around you. they are liable to fix up to a certain amt. depending on the value.
Ours broke the glass shelving in our china cabinet and insisted thats how they got it..like H3LL they DID NOT!!! They eventually sent someone measured and got new glass cut to what we wanted.
read your contract and see.... wishing you all the best.

Re: Movers damaging/losing furniture
Our movers broke our bookcase -- the pieces that hold one shelf in are missing and the top has a large crack. We had them note this on their paperwork but it looks like we have to jump through a lot of hoops if we want to file a claim (fill out paperwork, have them come and inspect, etc).
I'm not sure if we are just going to junk it (it wasn't especially expensive) or go through the multi-step process.
Did you mark it as a high-value item?

Re: Movers damaging/losing furniture
The movers broke the glass in one of our picture frames when they dropped it during delivery. They heard it happen. They said sorry. Gave me a number which I called and was told get two quotes in writing, take it to the less expensive place and we will reimburse the cost with the final bill. I submitted the paperwork with the quotes and the receipt and got a check back from the movers for the full replacement value of the glass. We had the optional moving insurance.

Re: Movers damaging/losing furniture
I have to check the contract but the company just told me basic insurance is $.60/lb which comes to about $50 (6% of the replacement value). The contract was not presented until the end of the move so we did not know that and were not offered supplemental insurance (or we would have taken it). Nothing other than "we're fully insured" was mentioned to us beforehand. Isn't it almost false advertising to advertise fully licensed and insured when the items are not really fully insured? Almost like bait and switch? I know I sound naive but I truly had no idea this is how the process worked before now.
ETA: they also didn't ask me to list high value items or an inventory list or anything.

During the move did the movers make a list?
For our insurance and move, the movers made the list during packing (they packed) and then we had to check off boxes indicating that XYZ was high value and estimate the value of the item.
It was explained to me before the move that if I packed it, and it broke, no matter the value, or the insurance purchased that I was responsible for its condition on arrival, but if they packed it, then they were responsible for it. We had things from our wedding in their original packaging i.e. our good china, and they removed it from its original boxes to pack it.
