Skylights

Has anyone put in a skylight? Can you tell me how much it cost? Any other tips?

We will be gut renovating our master bathroom soon. It's not going to be huge so I think we should forgo windows for skylights to give us more usable wall space. The skylights would give us more natural light and privacy too. I've heard of water problems, etc with them though so I want to make sure we do it right, if we do it.

Re: Skylights

this is just my opinion, but I would not forgo windows for a skylight for safety reasons! I don't even know if you could do that. I believe you are required to have at least 1.

I think it would look odd too.

Skylights are known to have issues. Not usually at the beginning but DH who has worked in construction for years, hates them, because they are always a problem at some point.

I however, love them Chat Icon

No, it's not required to have a window in the bathroom. Bedrooms must have one though.

The only thing a window would be needed for is ventilation but we plan on putting a fan in.

All bedrooms need at least one window to escape through in case of a fire. Kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, etc, don't HAVE to have a window for fire reasons. The reasoning is, in your bedroom, you are usually asleep, so if a fire occurs at night, you lose valuable minutes of escape time. If you are awake in another room, you have more time to get out.

We had two skylights in our foyer before the renovation, and had new ones put in during the reno. Never had a leak in the old ones, and they were 20+ years old.

I think its required for safety in case of a fire or something, not for ventilation. You should check with your town before forgoing windows in the bedroom
