I am so tired of meal time
And, I'm even more tired of hearing myself complain about it.
Last night we had a playdate here - every single other kid sat down and ate their PIZZA. He didn't take one bite. We're talking pizza here not broccoli.
Today - he had a good breakfast (always does) but lunch and dinner - NADA! Nothing. He is obsessed with eating fruit all day long though. I don't know if I should start denying him the fruit if he doesn't eat a meal - but to be honest, I'm in the home stretch of pregnancy and just don't have the fight in my anymore....it's not like he's asking for cookies.
What do I do? When does it get better?

We have the fruit thing too, and I really don't cut it off, I mean, its fruit, yeah, its probably filling them up, but....

I say feed him what he wants. Better than nothing, KWIM?
Don't stress yourself out about it Diana...if he wants to eat a fruit salad for dinner...go for it.

I actually got him McDonalds for lunch because I figured "Who won't eat McDonalds???" Guess what? He only ate his fries - didn't have a single nugget.
He's been waking up so early (5:30) that I am starting to wonder if he's waking up hungry?

ITA! As much as I stress too, I'm just happy when DD eats. And if she were asking for fruit, I'd be doing cartwheels

Yeah....do you think, since he likes fruit, that he would do, like a smoothie for dinner or before bed?

He does like smoothies - but he already gets enough milk/dairy so it's kind of not really solving my problem. I don't think he eats enough foods of substance.

Have you tried any of the Dr. Praegers frozen stuff? They have fishsticks, all kinds of veggies (patties, etc)...C LOVES them and they're the only way we're getting her to eat veggies right now But you bake them, so they're healthy! They have veggie burgers too.

Re: I am so tired of meal time
I feel your pain as my two are into the "I will only eat Dr. Pragger's fish nuggets"
I just want a normal kid who eats!
I try not to stress over it as it doesn't really serve a purpose, except to get me in a twist!

Re: I am so tired of meal time
I'm surprised the other kids ate. From here and my friends with toddlers it appears every kid at this age goes through this and theres nothing you can do about it. Your not alone. Your post the other day showed that, almost every toddler mom on here is having the same issues.
Noah has gone 3 days without a meal, just a mouthful of a snack or something here and there.
Most days we dont get any meals actually, just a bite or two of whats offered.
Noah see's a nutritionist b/c he is underweight and she told me to just go with it, give him what he wants and to not stress over it ( I was seriously starting to freak over the lack of eating)....Since I calmed down we have had a few days/weeks of good eating, then it goes back to crap again..lol...but at least I know its normal.
Try not to let it stress you so much. Jack will sense it.

Re: I am so tired of meal time
Lily has never been a great eater, so when she asks for something, I usually give it to her. I figure she's too young to really teach her what "meals" are. Once she's older, we'll get stricter with it, but for now, if she eats something....I"m good with it. Try not to stress too much about the "substance" of what he's eating. As long as he's gaining weight and happy and healthy, you're fine!

Things he will eat: Fish sticks Chicken Nuggets Sweet potato fries French toast Pancakes Oatmeal with Raisins (breakfast every day) Mini Bagels Yogurt Shakes Pasta with peas. Pizza
That's about where it stops. Those are the only things I will make him - thing is, there are days when he won't touch the above.

What do you do....I don't know if it's right but I just let him eat what he will...within reason. I stocked up on perdue chicken nuggets last week when he tossed my homemade ziti...booger!
When does it get better....I wish I could tell you but it has to at some point, right?

Re: I am so tired of meal time
My DS is not a bigger eater either. He rather eat fruit then most things. My pediatrician said that as long as his weight was ok that to not stress about it. She said that parents stress about eating and potty training way too much.
She also said that a child will almost never starve voluntarily and will eat when they are hungry.
Good Luck!
I have also stopped making him his own dinners. He eats what we eat. I am not wasting my time and then giving it to the dogs.

Re: I am so tired of meal time
The Dr (and my mom) both say dont worry about it. If she is hungry, she'll eat. I dont offer that many snacks througout the day. She gets (per the ped) 2-3 a day and I think they are spaced out enough where she will be hungry for her actual meals.

Just give him fruit. It's not worth the aggravation and it's healthy for him. DS went through a fruit phase when he was a little younger than Jack.

Re: I am so tired of meal time

EJ will ONLY eat the Gerber graduate toddler meals (the one in the blue trays). He won't eat any table food. He refuses to eat pizza, hot dogs and french fries. Which is great except we can never go to restaurant and order food for him. He refuses to eat meat so no chicken nuggets too. HUGE PITA!
I wanted to go to the Dominic Republic with him and DH. They have nice buffets but forget it. he will only eat bananas. I can't go on a trip for 1 week and the kid won't eat ANYTHING. I can't.
He does eat fruits but they HAVE TO come from the Dole container.

I don't know if this would work on EJ, but my MIL use to keep the packaging of things my DH liked as a kid because he was so picky and then put her own food in the packaging. For example, the hamburger wrappers from McDonald's. So maybe you can keep a few trays and try adding your own food.

Re: I am so tired of meal time
DD will always eat fruit over other things. When she is getting fruit with a meal I keep it in a separate bowl that she can see but can not reach. I tell her to take a bite of whatever else she is eating like her sandwich and then give her a piece of fruit. If she asks for fruit I make her take a bite of something else first. If she finishes her meal then she gets the bowl if there is any left.

Re: I am so tired of meal time
This post made me feel so much better. DS had become a horrible eater! He eats a few bites of things he usually likes and then will start to throw them "overboard" (off the high chair, over his shoulder) or chew them and spit them out! He'll eat more if he's playing and I put food in his mouth, but come on! Diana - I know how you feel about the eating with other kids - my son was the only who wasn't eating either! It's so frustrating! Just so glad I'm not the only one, and hope that it changes!
