Help with Kitchen flooring

We just bought a house. We are going to redo the kitchen in a few years but for now I had to get rid of the laminate floor that was there.

I was going to put tile BUT a friend suggested real hardwood, he can buy it and install it for about $115 (his side job) and probably an additional $100 for the floor guy who is already coming next weekend to finish the rest of the floors, to finish the kitchen.

Should I do it, or go with tile (probably about $2k complete)

Thanks

Re: Help with Kitchen flooring

I think hardwood looks gorgeous in kitchens, but tile is easier to clean.

Re: Help with Kitchen flooring

if you will be re-doing the kitchen fairly soon I'd go with the least expensive option.

i agree. particularly if you think you'll change the footprint of the kitchen when you redo it, as that will mean a new floor again.

ITA. We just actually re did our floor and put down some "sticky tiles" so that i have a decent floor until we do the kitchen. They have the look of tiles but at a fraction of the cost and should hold us over for a few years until we can do our kitchen. DH and I did it ourselves this past weekend.

ETA pic didnt upload right...

I think the same. It also depends on the rest of the house & the floors in the connecting rooms. We have hardwoods in almost our entire first floor and it's harder to maintain than tile, IMO. Personally, I like tile better in a kitchen.

Re: Help with Kitchen flooring

Thanks everyone! The wood floors would definitely be cheaper this time b/c we have a friend that will install for us and he gets the wood floors at wholesale.

I like the look of tile better, but the connecting rooms are all wood floors too.

We aren't sure when we will be able to afford redoing the kitchen. it could be a year, it could 6 - 10 years.

i love the look of hardwood in kitchens but IMO, it's not as practical. tile is easier to clean and less likely to get damaged if you drop something.

Re: Help with Kitchen flooring

I have hardwood, I grew up with tile in my kitchen, but the rest was carpeted.

Now that my floor plan is so open, everythings wood, and it really goes well together, its a great flow.
wood can be a little easier on your back if your standing for a long time. Theres a bit more give

Re: Help with Kitchen flooring

Thanks everyone!
I think we are going with the hardwood....it will be a 1/4 of the cost of the tile and for now that's important.

We plan on redoing the kitchen anyway in the next few years (hopefully it doesn't take 10) and will end up redoing the floors anyway.

i am just writing to say i am shocked that the vote is split. i thought for sure that hardwood would have won out.

I was just laughing out loud when i saw that it was split.

Even though I was hoping hardwood would win, I was pretty convinced that tile would.

That's why I voted tile.
I was actually surprised that wood did so well!
