So driving a smartcar isn't like playing Mario Kart.
I actually had to turn the wheel. Sounds silly, but I thought I'd be able to make a 90 degree turn by moving the wheel just a crack. 
DH took me to an empty corner of a mall parking lot and let me move the car around a bit. I managed to park the car 4x without hitting the gas pedal. I just eased off the brake and let the car glide from one spot to another.
