Please please pray for my little Pookie - Monday - noon update - some good news!!
We rushed Pookie to the emergency vet this morning. She'd been under the vet's care all spring due to gastro problems - those seemed to be getting better. In the past week and a half, she's been more lethargic and not herself- we were talking last night that we need to take her next week to vet. Long story short - looks like she has massive tumor - I am praying it's benign but vet doesn't think so. My poor baby is at the animal hospital awaiting diagnostic tests and she will be there the next night or two. We just paid more than our first mortgage payment will be for one night's hospital stay and the initial testing. I am beside myself and feel this is all my fault for not noticing this earlier. I will never forgive myself. Oh - and we are moving today - physically moving - moving van at house. We just bought our first house and I am almost 5 months pg - our bank account is done and I don't know how we're going to do all this. I think of her little face looking at me and I just keep crying again.
Please pray for my baby.
THanks
My pookie love has an aggressive soft tissue carcinoma - cancer.
We are moving today and when I leave work I will not even have a computer to keep up with you guys and get support.Chat Icon
Sat night - I'm at my mom's house so I'm using her computer - long update:
Re: help
Hi girls - at my mom's house and I wanted to jump on and say hi and update you guys. Kell - I got your texts yesterday - I'm sorry I've just been so overwhelmed.
Ugh - I just want to vomit - Pookie had surgery yesterday to take out the tumor - obviously we need to wait for the biopsy results which will come this week - but short of a miracle - it's not good - three doctors have already said pretty definitely that it pretty certainly looks like aggressive soft tissue carcoma - the big C. They said it looks horribly aggressive being that I just noticed this in the past month. Surgeon called me last night after surgery and he's now been the second doctor to say that it may have happened from her being vaccinated - don't you love how vets tell you there's a slight chance of cancer from vaccinations? So glad this is the first I'm hearing of this now. She's an indoor cat - i would have never vaccinated her.
Surgeon told me that they got all the visible tumor BUT typically, they like to cut out extra around tumor to try and get microscopic cells - he said in a little cat they can't do that - not enough room - in a big dog you can. So, they got tumor but pretty cetain there are microscopic cancer cells that are prob already growing in my poor baby. Tumor was huge - they said she got through surgery fine.
They called me this morning to give update - the nice doc we met with yesterday - and she told me I could come visit today at visiting hours - so after continuing to move and clean old apt allday - went to see her - i knew it would upset me but glad i did - baby girl is obviously very tired but i was so glad to see her - the poor thing is shaved from the middle of her head to almost her tail and has 39 staples - in my poor lil frankenstein girl. They gave her some tuna and she gobbled it up and they said i can spoil her with whatever food she wants to encourage her to eat. So I stayed with her 1.5 hours and we just cuddled and I sang to her and gave kissesChat Icon
She was maybe going to be able to come home today but since Jamie was on a 24 shift - he wanted to wait until tomorrow so I wouldn't have to get her and bring her home by herself.
She has a pain patch on and will be on antibiotics and more pain pills when she comes home tomorrow - one good thing is they thought she'd have drains :( which would be very messy and stuff but she doesn't - so at least we can bring her up on bed with us where she is used to sleeping and keep her locked in big bathroom during sday resting. I feel horrible that she is coming home to a completely new home that she doesn't know - nothing familiar. So - my baby got through the surgery - but this will just be the beginning - we're going to have to meet with the oncologist in the next week or so and see what we're going to do and what we can afford to do :( - how can i choose???
I just can't even begin to tell you how my heart is broken - she is my best friend and my life. My poor little girl - she is going to die. If we don't do radiation - which a lot of peeps are saying is way too rough on tem - she will die - maybe not soon - but she will. My little girl is only 6. I cried myself to sleep last night in the new house- i was so lonely. I don't even know how I'm going to sleep tonight in this strange cold new house without DH tonight (he's working overnight.)
3rd update - Mon morning
Hello all - thank you so so much for your continued prayers, thoughts, and hugs. Again, still no internet after the move this weekend - so had to wait until work this morning... I was feeling pretty good after I saw her on Sat - excited to bring her home on Sunday - vet called Sunday morning - her red blood cell count dropped drastically to 12% overnight - a barely sustainable level After listening to the options - which were really give her a blood transfusion and pray or end it, I decided on blood transfusion. They said it would take a few hours, so I could come see her before. She was so so weak It was so bad. I was a mess the whole time. Only 50% chance that her body will take the new blood and not reject. They don't know 100% why her body is fighting the rbc, could be any number of reasons - the cancer, surgery, etc. I just want to bring her home And if her body doesn't take the blood and we choose not to try other things, we cannot bring her home because she will have a very uncomfortable passing due to no oxygen Her level was up to 18% before the end of the transfusion - so that's positive - but it's all so touch and go.
I can't type anymore - I'm sorry. Please just pray - I'm terrified. I cannot even process this info because this has all taken place in two days - I can't even think.
Thanks guys.
Monday - 12 pm...
Vet FINALLY just called! Pookie's red blood cell count is now up to 20% which she said is excellent and she is coming home today!! :) Of course I'm apprehensive and they'll tell me the signs to look for to make sure it's not dropping - and we'll bring her in for a blood test on Thursday to make sure the levels are continuing to rise. She told me it can take a few weeks for her blood levels to return to normal, so the fact that it's gone up 8% since her transfusion last night is really positive. So, I'm bringing her home this evening!! :) She has a long road ahead to get strong and fight the big fight but keep praying.
Thanks so much for all your love and prayers!

Re: Please please pray for my little Pookie
I am so so sorry you are going through this. I know how horrendous it is when your pet is sick and you feel so helpless . It's truly horrifying.
Try not to blame yourself though- even though I know from experience how hard it is.
My vet told me that cats have the instinct to hide when they are sick- becuase when they are in the wild being sick makes them more vulnerable to preditors. My cat showed no symptoms either- until the tumor was huge.
I kept blaming myself- if only this, if only that, but in the long run there was no way we could have known.
Don't beat yourself up- just hang in there...
And many prayers!

Thanks guys. She's going into surgery now. I can't even get in touch with DH because he's moving stuff - but I made that decision after speaking to the vet. We will decide after about chemo or radiation - vet was telling me she wouldn't even do radiation on her own pet.

Aww I am so sorry to hear this. Hang in there... I'll pray it all goes well. I know you must be a mess. It's so hard when they are sick like that.
It's really disturbing how many cats get cancer... it's such a big thing in cats it seems... I dont' get it...
