Moms of 6/7 months olds (napping question)

So I'm in the process of sleep training (CIO) for naps. So far it's not going so great, Shane's putting up a tough fight which I totally expected, but I'm committed. Anyway, my question is.....how long are your babies napping, how often and how many hours in between? I guess maybe could you list your wake-up/nap/go to bed schedule for me?

He was never a good napper even when he slept on top of me, but as I'm doing CIO, i'm trying to figure out how long I should keep him up before I put him back down for the next nap, even if the nap he takes is short. He's usually cranky and tired after 2 hours....should they be awake more than 2 hours at a stretch at 6/7 months? Any insight would be great so I can try and create a napping schedule for him....once he actually is able to nap on his own. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I put Alexa down for a nap after 1.5- 2 hours of waking. Naps are usually 1-2 hours long, every once in a while longer.

She takes any where from 2-4 naps a day. it varies.

She went to bed last night at 7:30 pm woke up at 9 am
went down for a nap at 10:30 and is still sleeping....

Re: Moms of 6/7 months olds (napping question)

I put Sash down every 1.5 to 2 hours as well. I know that as they get older, they can have more hours of wakefulness, but her naps are still pretty short. Usually 30 to 40 mins. Sometimes I get a longer one-- but, rarely.

I feel like I spend the entire day getting her to nap. She usually cries for about 10 to 20 mins before she falls asleep-- and RARELY falls asleep easily in the stroller, so I try to be home-- but, it doesn't always work out that way.

She takes like 4 to 5 naps a day because they are so short.

8am-wake up
11:30am Nap 1-2 hours
3:30pm Nap 1-2 hours
8pm Bedtime

My DD is 6 1/2 months old. The above times are approximates and vary slightly from day-to-day. Additionally, the length of naps vary from 45 minutes to 2 hours. My DD's napping schedule also varies based on several factors.
1. If I am the one caring for her or the babysitter or DH. I am very consistent with naps and ensure she is put down at the correct times.
2. DD's schedule also varies from the weekdays (bc she is woken up at 6 to go to babysitter's) vs. the weekends (bc I let her sleep until about 8am).
When she gets up at 6am she sometimes has 3 Naps a day with the 1st about 9am, 2nd at 12:30 or 1pm and the last at 4 or 430pm. HTH

hahah

Yeah but Alexa Didn't sleep AT ALL until about 18 weeks when I started to slowly sleep train her. We work really hard at sleeping and her schedule for 4 weeks and now its pretty good. She still has days where she barely naps....

Once you really start working on sleep training it will get so much better....

Re: Moms of 6/7 months olds (napping question)

My babies are almost 8 months, but have been on this schedule for about a month now:

Wake up around 7.
Nap #1: 9 - 10:30-11
Nap #2: 1- 2:30-3

Bedtime at 7.

At 6 months, they would take a 3rd nap around 4:30 for an hour or so, but I can't get them to go down for it, anymore. So they are up for 4 hours at the end of the day. The rest of the day they are usually never awake for more than 2-2.5 hours at a time.

This is sooo helpful. My mom thinks I'm putting him down to nap too many times....but right now with the CIO he's only been napping 30 minutes at the most, sometimes not at all. For instance yesterday he napped a grand total of 45 minutes all day, I had him down 4 times, she said it was too much. She said not to put him down for the 4th nap and I told her she was nuts, he had barely slept all day and it was only 3 pm, there was NO WAY he was going to make it to a 6:30 bathtime without at least attempting another nap.

I've been putting him down every 2 hours so good, I'm glad I stuck with my gut on this one. God he just won't decrease his crying time and we're on day 3. It's torture!

This was me too and I'm just sick of it. I can't go anywhere or he won't sleep at all, he won't nap in the stroller anymore (used to be a sure thing) or the car (also used to be a sure thing). And he was needing to be heavily rocked to fall asleep and had to sleep on me. I physically CANNOT rock him back and forth anymore 4 times a day, he's too heavy, my back is going to go out. And I couldn't get anything done during the day because he was asleep on me half the day. So that's why I just decided to do CIO because I was at my wits end. I'll let you know how it goes.

this is how it was in the beginning for me...

Can you read his sleepy cues?

the MINUTE she shows sleepy cues, not over tired ones, I put her down. There have been times when she has woken up from a nap and was tired 45 min later and I put her right back down.

I don't look at my watch when deciding to put her down for a nap I look at her cues.

when she starts "spacing" out, not moving around as much, not as much eye contact is when she is starting to get sleepy.

once she starts to rub her eyes and whine she is already too tired and I missed "the window" when it's easier to put her down.

If I time it JUST RIGHT reading her cues I can nurse her, put her in bed drowsy but awake and she falls asleep.

if I wait an extra 5 min and get her when she is over tired... for get it.. she will cry 5+ min until she falls asleep.

It takes time and A LOT Of observance to figure this out but I HIGHLY recommend you don't look at a clock and watch for his cues!!

Here's an old post of mine...
POST

My son has always been one to not be able to stay awake long at all.

At 6 months, i think maybe it was every 2 hours at most. Especially since his naps were cr*p and we had just done CIO. We were on 4 naps a day at that point. Chat Icon

Re: Moms of 6/7 months olds (napping question)

Hey Alissa! With our girl, it pretty much depends on her waking time..if she is up at 7...then 3 naps..if its her usual 8-830, then 2 naps:

830 wake up
1130 nap
300 nap
730 bed

How did sleep training go at night for you?? That seems to set the stage for naps ...we seem to still be in the processChat Icon ...our girl doesn't go down if we put her in awakeChat Icon ...maybe we aren't strict enuf...we rock or nurse her till she's drowsy, and then put her down..she cries for a min and then goes to sleep if we're having a good day..otherwise it usually works by the second try..like I said still a work in process...but what an improvement...good luck and keep us posted!Chat Icon

What about the light factor in his room...we put dark sheets(still haven't made it to the store to buy light-blocking shadesChat Icon) so its almost just as dark as when she goes to bed at night..seems to help...
