Did anyone ever close through the mail?
We may close through the mail instead of making another expensive trip down to Florida....we could buy a piece of furniture for the amount of money it's going to cost to get down there again for 1 day  Originally we were going to drive down and stay there for a week but my DH probably won't be able to do that with work - I don't want to spend all that $ on airfare just to fly down for 1 day......
I don't know what to do......I hate to not get the keys and go over the house once it is ours

I haven't done this- I dont think you can in New York 
the only thing that would concern me about closing through the mail is the final walk-through- can you have your parents do that for you- you want to make sure that everything is in working order and clean when you take title to the house

i asked about that - and they said that the walk through doesn't have anything to do with the closing and that i don't HAVE to do the walk through in order to close...i can have a relative do it for me though if that is what we choose to do....so my parents would do the walk through for us (which s-u-c-k-s, we should be doing it!).....
we both really want to be there for closing - but if we move sometime in september we figure we can just do it through the mail - but if we move in october maybe we'll go for closing in september - i don't think i can go that long without seeing the house again
i'm so torn.....i really rather use the $ it's going to cost in airfare for things for the house....

You can close through the mail, it's a fairly simple process. THey'll mail you everything with stickies where to sign and then you mail it back with the checks.
Also, another option- if your parents live in Florida, why don't you give them Power of Attorney to do the closing for you?
Just make sure you or your parents do a walkthrough either way. It's very important, because nothing can be done once the closing takes place, if you don't bring it up at or before closing.
