PSA about painting your own kitchen cabinets...

First and foremost, I found it very easy, but I just saw on a decorating show the other night that you should use marine paint because it's super durable and holds up to water and scrubbing. I wish I would have known that before I painted mine with regular ol' paint. But thought I'd pass it onto all of you!

I think I saw the same show.

The one thing though is that if anyone does use marine paint, make sure it is "Topside" paint.

Don't use the bottom paint. Bottom paints have chemicals in them to make it harder for algea and barnicles to stick to the bottom of a boat, so you really don't want that paint exposed to your family.

Thanks for the tip!

If we end up buying my parent's house- we're definitely painting the cabinets.

Stupid question, do you have to go to a marine supply store to get this paint?

Yep. Easiest and probably cheapest place to find it is West Marine. Or for those up in CT or Hudson Valley that want to drive to Hartford, Defender Marine.

I looked online earlier and, fair warning, this stuff isn't cheap. it's $35 per quart.

How limited are the color options?

you're mostly going to find whites, off whites, and potentially some greens and blues, but boat decks are usually in the white/off-white family. unless you are super good about keeping your boat maintained, sealed, waxed, etc, the sun is going to bleach out a color, so that's why it's mostly whites.
