I really don't know (even though my mom owns two co-ops) but this is one of the MAJOR reasons I would never buy one...the maintenance fees can go up at any time! I would assume though, if they're asking for your permission, that there must be some sort of clause in the contract that says that you can back out in a situation like this...I'm so sorry you're dealing with this!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am not sure about the maintenance fee and how often they can change it, on a yearly basis, etc... but this is one of the reasons I never got a co-op. The maintenance fee can be increased.

Maintenance usually goes up every year on co-ops, just like property taxes go up every year on houses.

Why aren't you asking your attorney yet? This is exactly what your attorney gets paid to do!

I would think your attorney would be better suited to advise you over strangers on the internet.

wow thats a huge increase Chat Icon I hope it works out for you and you are able to get out of it. I dont know where you are looking for coops- but ours is in queens- we have raises two years in a row and then none in the third and our raises are usually only about $20-$50- this year was $20

exactly! That's what normally happens in most Queens coops(this one is in Queens too) even on a the coop board meeting they told us that IF they ever increase the maint . they never increase it more than $50 MAX. So I don't know where this came from.

That's what I was thinking $150 is a huge increase. It's $300 after 2 years. Insane!!!
