There is a snitch on my block

and being the newest homeowner, I'm afraid my neighbors think it's us.....

Someone called the town about a neighbors car sitting in their driveway w/o plates...They were given 10 days to get rid of it and they were Pi$$ed..While outside one day,I inquired about it and let them know it wasn't us.....Now,it happened to people across the street from me...They had a car in the street w/plates but it hasn't moved for a few weeks. Yesterday, the town came and gave them 10 days to move it....they are beyond pi$$ed... WWYD? would you confront them and let them know it's not you? or would you just ignore it? I have to say, I'm completely shocked someone on this block would do that, everyone seems so friendly and helpful..........

Re: There is a snitch on my block

Its not necessarily any of the neighbors that called the town. there is a guy that drives around my sisters neighborhood and calls the town on any "violations" that he sees. and the town has to go an investigate. this guy doesnt even live anywhere near my sister yet he calls stuff in all the time.

(my sister works for the town and was told this by one of the building guys that does the investigating)

So, you might have a guy like that....or it might be the same guy that its my sisters neighborhood...not sure where you are located...

Re: There is a snitch on my block

I can't believe the town is forcing a homeowner to move a car off of THEIR OWN PROPERTY. That is efffin ridiculous if you ask me, regardless if it has plates or not.

I would have the neighbor challenge that rule with the town and ask them to present the law from their town code that forces them to move the car. What's next? They will be searching my garage?

There are plenty of people with collector cars that may not have plates because they are in the middle of modifying them or changing stuff out like the engine. The car may not be driveable.

I now know that if I want to store a car on my driveway that doesn't have plates, I am going to have to get a car cover for it so they can't see the lack of plates.

Unbelieveable.

I wouldn't worry too much about making sure the neighbors don't think its you.. if you happen to be talking to them, you could casually bring it up if you like. But if you make it a point to go over there specifically to tell them it wasn't you, it sort of makes it look like it was and you're trying to cover it up.

I would assume its one of the other neighbors that has an issue with it since its now happened twice. Just because someone seems friendly and helpful doesn't mean they wouldn't be the ones to call.

Personally, i don't see anything wrong with the fact that a neighbor called the town about the car in the street with no plates. A car with no plates is usually (not always..) undriveable and can be an eyesore to the rest of the block. I wouldn't want a car like that on my block. Would i report them myself? eh, not so sure. Depends on how long it was there.

But, the house who had it in their own driveway is another matter, and should not have been reported. It's their property and the town should have nothing to do with the car. As another poster said, it could be a vintage car that is being fixed up, or a clunker someone is working on.
As long as its not in the street, it shouldn't be anyones business but the homeowners.

See I have a problem with this. Sure I can agree that maybe if its a real junker that nobody wants to look at people will get ******.

But the fact that I can't park a car on my own driveway without it being registered is a total joke.

Like I said, what if it's a show car? Many show cars are not "street legal" because of the upgrades they may have done to it. So even if the owner wanted to get plates for it, it would be IMPOSSIBLE for them to do so.

And here's another thing... is it not OK to have a car parked on my driveway with no plates... but it's perfectly OK for my neighbor to have his huge oversized BOAT parked in his driveway?

What is more the eyesore?

I think you're misreading that post.

It is NYS law that you can't have a car on the STREET without plates. You CAN have a car without plates in your driveway, on your private property.

So unless the OP's town has an ordinance stating that cars without plates on private property must be covered, something isn't right.

This isn't an issue of eyesores being on ths street or on someone's private property, it's a matter of established, codified LAW.

Or an ENORMOUS RV. Someone down the block has one and it is HUGE. If I had to live next to them and see that everyday Chat Icon Chat Icon

To the OP - I wouldn't say anything. If you happen to be chatting with them you could say something. We had a similar situation, a house a few doors down had an illegal apt. We didn't even know about it. But the owner was talking to DH and saying how someone turned him in. So DH said Do you know who it was? I was nervous the guy would think we did it b/c we are new.

So you can't park a registered car on the street and an unregistered car can't sit on your own property? That doesn't sound right.

If the car on the street was abandoned, that would be one thing. But if it belongs to the homeowner and there are no rules about street parking in your town how can they make them move the car?

And I dont see why the unregistered car parked on the driveway is any issue at all - it's all private property.

Are you in a village?
i ask b/c Lindenhurst village had people drive around and enfore local codes. IE: fines for putting garbage out before 7PM, covering up Town issued signs for and upcoming variance (i had a flag over mine in my first house... i was ordered to take it down immediately or pay a fine)...

just wondering if the TOWN is issuing these and not a neighbor?

my parents live in Holbrook on a dead end street (they are the last house) and has been friends with all the neighbors for 30 years (there is only 7 houses on the block) and they were told by the town they had to get rid of a car with no plates in our driveway.

You can have one unregistered vehicle on your property as long as it is behind a fence, in a garage or under a car cover. Unfortunately I know this part of the Town code all too well.

It may not be a snitch-it could be a Sanitation inspector who was in the area checking up on the garbage contractors that wrote it up, a building inspector in the area for something else or a law investigator in the area for other reasons.

I'll preface this by saying I work for a local township....According to NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law Section 1224 a vehicle left in the road for more than six hours with no plates (or expired or switched plates) is considered to be abandoned. Also the first six to eight feet of your property is Town right away.

The op said the car parked in the street has plates and belongs to the homeowner. That's against the law?

I saw your other post about the unregistered car needing to be fenced in, garaged or covered - I would have never guessed that but it is what it is.

I wouldn't say anything. Let it go.

We live in a village and can't even park on the street overnight and can't have commerical vehicles, no plates, etc in our driveways so the police would get them on their own.

I think it is good people are complaining. It keeps a neighborhood nice.

ETA: It is against the law in some towns to do these things mainly if you live in a village. They have strict rules but for reasons.

They don't check to see who the owner of the vehicle is until the vehicle is actually impounded. But the vehicle could have plates on it but they could be exipred, switched or suspended (insurance lap etc) and that is against the law if it is there for more than 6 hrs

Ok, I guess my question is if none of those situations exist - the car is 100% legal and there is proper insurance on the vehicle with valid plates and registration - can it be parked on a street indefinitely?

If a car is a 100% legal w/insurance and valid reg then yes it could be on the street. There are some things that a cop may pick on-facing the wrong direction or if they feel it is causing a "road hazard" they could have it impounded. The "road hazard" is pretty much up to the cops discretion.
