I doubt you'll get out of it like others have said its common in many villages on LI. Can't hurt to try though if you have the time & energy to go to court for it.

I'm curious ... did you notice that your neighbors weren't parking on the street overnight?

I never thought about it. And since I live on a main road, there are stores and restaurants, so there were always cars there at night. I never looked at the street at 2am though.

Wow! That sounds crazy! I can't believe they are going to get away with this. I never heard of the idea that I am "just supposed to know" not to park there. I hope I have a sympathetic judge and I will try some of the suggestions, but I guess I will probably have to pay.

I actually do live on a main road, but don't know of any signs on this particular road.

I am willing to pay for my mistakes, but how am I supposed to know to ask the town about something that I don't know about? So unfair.

Court date is in a month. I will update then.

I believe when you own a home you are supposed to educate yourself on the village's laws & regulations. Not sure how it is done since I live in the city and rent. But similar, you are not supposed to make a right on red ANYWHERE in nyc... That's not posted anywhere but as a resident of nyc, I'm supposed to know that. Same with alternate side parking rules etc etc.

I rent too.

When DD was born at the end of May, I had some family stay with me. I wasn't sure if my driveway would fit all the cars, so i parked my car on the street overnight. There are no signs indicating that this cannot be done. I got a ticket saying I can't park 2 - 6am on the street. 40 bucks! There are no signs anywhere on my street that I know of. My husband says there are signs on a different street, like 7 blocks away.

My mother did the same thing (parked on my street overnight and got a ticket), she went to court tonight, but they are making her pay anyway! She had pictures to show there are no signs and everything, but the judge said there are signs somewhere. How can they do this? How can I fight this? My court date is in September and I can't let them get away with this! If anyone has advice, please tell me.

Did you park on the same street that your mom did? If so, perhaps you should have thought that since your Mom got a ticket earlier, the same would happen to you.

It stinks but live and learn.

This is true, but she didn't tell me that she got a ticket!!!!! I don't know why, but she didn't.

When you go to fight it, just explain that there was no room in your driveway for you car and that you put a note on your car indicating so but it must have gotten taken off or something... blame it on the rain, surely it HAD to have rained that day hahaha. (as a resident, I don't see why you can't park in front of your home on occasion... you know?)

Like I said earlier, at my parent's house we NEVER got tickets when we put a note on the car that it belonged to our address.

If they deny you ask where you can get a list of rules and regulations of the village (?) or town you live in since you were never informed of this when you moved in.

good luck!

hmmm... is it a legal rental? B/c then you can claim you were never informed of the laws... Though I am not sure if it's your responsibility to educate yourself, KWIM?
