Re: Backyards?
Take a look at my pics. I feel your pain and than some. We had a lot of work to do when we bought 2 years ago and it's still a work in progress outside (and inside). Do what makes you happy or what you need for function. It's hard, but you come to learn to live with it. Check out my before/during pics. Link
This is our backyard now. We had to take our pool down and might replace it in a few years.
This is what our Front yard looks like now.
It all comes in time.....believe me I'm not happy either with my backyard. I look out my windows and it's mostly dirt. We will probably try to reseed in the Fall and we should have nicer grass next year.

Re: Backyards?
Yes we have the crappiest most disgusting backyard and we don't have the money to fix it, I HATE it. Its full of weeds and huge overgrown plants from the previous owners who didn't take care of them for years, obviously. We also got rid of an old non functioning above ground pool so now there is a huge sandpit (aka. weed garden) in the middle. I am hoping maybe next year we will have the money to get rid of everything and plant sod. I don't even need landscaping, just some nice grass.

I hate my yard I think it is so ugly and a malaria breeding ground. I don't even go outside unless I have on long pants and a long sleeve shirt. The bugs are insane.
The brick around our pool is falling apart. In addition to mowing the lawn we also have to mow the patio.
I'm convinced the people we bought our house from didn't do a thing. We try to cleanup the very back of the yard in the fall and spring. The amount of leaves back there is insane. We also discovered that area was a burial ground for broken tools and bricks.
Slowly but surely we will get there. I wish I had a nice yard I wanted to spend time in but we will....someday.

I love your pool. It's beautiful. As for mowing the patio... not sure if this will do the trick but how about one of those outdoor area rugs?

Re: Backyards?
I can sympathize...we inherited an overgrown large property (well we bought it, but Idon't think the seller's did anything in 5 years)
After pulling the 4 foot weeds....I just start clipping and this is the first year (after 4 years) that I'm actually pretty satisfied with how it looks. We still have a lot of greenery (more than most people), but it's prettyy serene.

Re: Backyards?
We have a decent size backyard (we're on an acre). We've been working on it for 7 years and we're still not done. I'm hoping to do plantings this fall. We were scheduled for Spring, but after reviewing the plan, we decided we didn't like any of it, so now we're paying another landscape architect for a different plan more in tune to our liking.
I'll have to post before and afters.
