closet problem...

so we moved into our house and every bedroom has sliding doors on the closets, and i hate sliding doors, so for our bedroom we wanted to get bifold doors....

our problem is the frame on our closets are 1 inch smaller than the size of the doors you can buy at home depot or lowes

DH wants to get new sliders but i cant stand them.....

we can try to cut the bifold doors to make them fit

try to expand the door frame which looks possible

or my vote is to finish off the molding and hang curtains to cover the closets.....

what do you think would be best????

edit
we are open to other suggestions too.....

Re: closet problem...

we have the same exact problem- the bifolds are exactly an inch too big and of course we had already taken off the closet doors and threw them out Chat Icon

we are going to try to remove a panel thats on the inside and see if that will give us the one inch- if not, we're doing curtains

Re: closet problem...

If it was me, I would just trim the doors an inch. That's probably the simplest method, and still give you the bi-fold doors.

Re: closet problem...

I would call home depot and ask if they can trim the doors for you. I would then paint the part that was trimmed off and hang them. HTH

You can order a custom size and I don't think the price is going to be much more at all.

Another option is making the opening in the closet bigger which is what we did in our first home. It is a lot easier then trying to make the doors smaller.

Re: closet problem...

Masonite and jen-weld have doors in 1" increments so you should be able to find a bi-fold that works. We had the same problem - I think they put the framing around the opening to fit the track doors and it just makes the opening to small for bi-folds. I hung a curtain as a temporary solution in the guest room but I'm not happy with that solution.

Re: closet problem...

If you're going to trim the doors remember that if its 1" of difference you probably only want to trim each door 1/2" of an inch. Chat Icon

Re: closet problem...

I just want to thank you for bringing this issue to my attention b/c I would've done what Marybeth did and threw out the old doors and then said "oh crap".

I think ordering custom ones is the best option...

could you do a combination of two sizes? that's what we did.

also - could you go down a size and add trim to where the doors meet - to cover the gap?

Re: closet problem...

I would shave 1/4" off each side of each door.
