We had one the first year we lived here.

For whatever reason that was the last year too Chat Icon

Not sure why they stopped having them.

Re: Block Parties- Do you have one?

i live in brooklyn and yes my block has one as does almost every block around me
i love them i think they are so much fun, yes you are tending to your guests but i definately socialize with my neighbors also, we try to make it casual
dh hauls out the big bbq and family and friends all help out bringing things outside and cleaning up, to me thats kind of the point its just a big get together, if i spent the whole time tending to guests id invite less guests cause thats not fun and i want to enjoy it

oh a low turnout probably has to do with how many families on the block participate not how many people are actually at the block party, remember the families contribute money to help pay for dj, kiddie rides and any other activities they sponser, they probably aren't getting enough money with the families that contribute

In my case, I was told that they had left over money and were putting it towards the following year's block party (which would be this year.)

Last year's party was poorly planned. They gave short notice (short notice IMO when the party is for well over a 100 homes) and planned it on a day when many of the neighbors attend a wine tasting event. (Which is weird because the organizers usually attend the wine tasting or at least all their friends do. You'd think they would have been aware of that date not booked the party then.) I think something else is going on with one of the organizers. Her home recently went up for sale, so I don't know if that has something to do with her not wanting to take on the party.

No but we have a beach party. Same idea, just a different location. We had them growing up as well. I love them.

Not on my block but this year I am going to my aunt's and my friend's. I absolutely love them. Besides our yearly feast, some of my best summer memories are from block parties!

We might but I never hear about it and I wouldn't go.

omg i love it Chat Icon Chat Icon MY DH always calls me anti-social Chat Icon

This year will be our 2nd annual block party. DH & our neighbor organize them so I guess I have to go lol The neighbors don't mingle or party together so I don't really see the point of a block party but I guess its a reason to party so I don't mind. Its just all our neighbors having their own little parties at the same time just in the street Chat Icon I could live without having ours. I enjoy going to our friends block party....one a year would be enough for me lol

Re: Block Parties- Do you have one?

The block I grew up on started doing them, but not until I got older. I went to a few and they were fun.

I don't know if people do them down here.

No and have to say not a big fan of them.

Never saw the point in closing the road down on everyone - including those who want no part in it all.

I hate to say it, but I feel the same way. On my old block I had a broken foot & was in a cast/on crutches & they wouldn't let me drive up & down the block even though I had to work that day. Instead I had to walk the 2 blocks to & from my car on crutches. I think it permanently poisoned me towards them

We just organized one a few weeks ago - asked for a $5 contribution from each family to cover food and asked each family to bring a side dish. We closed off the block and had most of the people in our front yard, with the kids playing in the street.

It was realllllly nice Chat Icon

This is how we used to do them when I was growing up. If someone on my block suggested one like this, I would be interested.

The ones I have been to lately consist of bucking up a ton of cash for bounce houses, DJs, ice cream man, etc. and the neighbors don't even talk to each other. I don't really see the point. If I want to just socialize with my friends and family only, I will just have my own party.

Re: Block Parties- Do you have one?

Yes we have one. This is the 3rd one I am having and the first year was great and last year was okay this year only 1/2 the homes are participating but that is okay we still have a great time.

We get a DJ, bouncy thing for the kids, a guy that comes and makes zeppoles for 2 hours, face painting, water balloon toss, raffles, volleyball games, and each house does something. I am doing the italian ices this year! I love them and I really do think they are a lot of fun!

Re: Block Parties- Do you have one?

My parents do... I have always loved going to them!
I WISH this neighborhood did, but I haven't heard anything.

I applied for the Edy's/Dyers one but I am assuming I wasn't picked!!

Re: Block Parties- Do you have one?

Yes our block has them. When we first moved in 6 years ago they were annual, then in 2005 the organizers decided they wanted nothing to do with it anymore. Last year I organized it, this year another house is organizing.

Love block parties

Re: Block Parties- Do you have one?

Never had one growing up, although they apparently had them when I was too young to remember.

I now live on a cul-de-sac with 6 total houses. I somehow doubt that we will have one.
