Block Parties- Do you have one?

I moved into a new neighborhood, happy that last yr was the 1st time we had one.

This yr we wont be having one Chat Icon
Due to coordination of it, etc.

My last house where I grew up, NEVER had one either.

I love BLOCK PARTIES!

Re: Block Parties- Do you have one?

When I was growing up my mom's block only had one, I can't remember why they didn't do it after that.

Our block is supposedly having one for the first time in over 35 years (DH grew up in this house) but I'm hearing that now that it's come time to pay up suddenly a lot of families who said yes are going to be away that day. Chat Icon

No and have to say not a big fan of them.

Never saw the point in closing the road down on everyone - including those who want no part in it all.

My area has nice size yards so we use our backyards and holidays for get togethers

Totally agree. The ones I have been to - the neighbors don't even socialize because each individual house has their own guests to tend to.

I just don't see the point.

Our block doesn't b/c there is no outlet, therefore we can't get a permit for it. However, our cross st has one and we are a part of it. It's every July.

Re: Block Parties- Do you have one?

We just organized one a few weeks ago - asked for a $5 contribution from each family to cover food and asked each family to bring a side dish. We closed off the block and had most of the people in our front yard, with the kids playing in the street.

It was realllllly nice Chat Icon

Re: Block Parties- Do you have one?

I usually go to my friend's block party every year.. If they do one on my block I won't be attending, I have decided that I hate my Landlord and his wife and want no part of them

We were able to get the permit on the same day, by the internet.

Yep we are having one this year. Our block just started having them 3 years ago. To me it is a summer tradition on LI.

Re: Block Parties- Do you have one?

Nope, but our block is kind of set-up weird with a side street off of it on one side so that could be why (due to blocking off the street?). My Dad's block used to have one but it was really just a big party for one of the families. Less and less neighbors started paying but then were showing up so it ruined it. I love block parties and wish we had one!

Re: Block Parties- Do you have one?

We had one last year.

We had moved in Nov 2007, had a block party in July or August of 2008.

There was not another one this year. We think it's because more then half the houses didn't participate.

Which kind of sucks because we had a good time last year.

Re: Block Parties- Do you have one?

My mom used to coordinate the block party for years. I remember going around with her when i was little and collecting money. She always did such an awesome job and they were so much fun. Now i live in Long Beach and even though our block can't have one (cuz the street can't be blocked), we end up going to one almost every weekend in July and August on our friends blocks!

Re: Block Parties- Do you have one?

We've had them in the past. This is the first year since I've been living here (over 8 years) that we're not having one. Chat Icon Apparently the 2 women who used to organize it don't feel like doing it anymore (they stated "poor turnout" last year which I find it hard to believe b/c there had to be over 100 people at it. Chat Icon )

I've been talking with the neighbor behind me about it and we may take over the event for next year.

I've never lived anywhere that had themChat Icon I'd just as soon have people over in the yard w/o blocking traffic. I have been to a couple of fun ones.
