Best way to wean off of caffiene?

I just recently found out I'm pg with #2 (two WAY under two!) and I drink one venti cup of coffee every day. Not too much, but one venti coffee from Starbucks is way more than one serving of caffiene.

I'm only about 3-4 weeks preggo, and I know that I don't share nutrients with the baby until around week 6...

Today I got a grande instead of a venti, so maybe I'll just wean off like that until I'm down to a tall? I'm trying to avoid doing this cold-turkey because I get severe headaches from caffiene withdrawal.

What would you do? I have time to wean, right? I'll go cold-turkey if I have to, and just work through the bad headaches if it's best for the baby.

Thanks! Chat Icon

many people do half-decaf and half regular coffee, until they are down to all decaf.

for me, the morning cup of coffee was more in my head then anything....going straight to decaf. was fine for me. i just liked the hot beverage and the strong smell and taste in the morning, esp. in the winter!

Oh, good point. I could do half-calf this upcoming week and just do all decaf by the weekend.

Thanks!

Do it slowly...I cut out my caffeine intake when I found out I was pregnant and suffered terribly. I had the worst withdrawals ever. Headache, tremors, insomnia, etc. When I went to the OB, she said I could have 24 oz of soda a day and it would be fine. Thank god for that. I now drink one 12 ounce can of Pepsi a day. It has been a lifesaver. I never realized I was that addicted to caffeine. I knew I would get headaches if I didn't drink it everyday, but to quit cold turkey was the biggest mistake I ever made....Good luck..

I cut caffine cold turkey....and had no side effects what so ever. During my first trimester I never had coffee....but now that its hot and I'm in my second trimester....I give in to an iced coffee or a frappacino every now and then. I thought I was going to be miserable without my daily huge coffee...but I've been fine.

I still drink a cup of coffee every day. I'd be a zombie without it

ITA... plus if you have an apple in addition to your small coffee - it has the same effect as caffeine.

Re: Best way to wean off of caffiene?

I always drink a HUGE cup from 7-11 in the morning and then more at night. I weaned myself down (changed sizes each week) to the smallest cup (12oz) and cut out my evening coffee altogether. I have a very strong addiction to caffeine, but I think I weaned myself appropriately because I would normally get a severe migraine without it.

I will continue to drink my small coffee every morning, of if I skip it, have some in the evening.

Try switching to half decaf... and when you get to tall - ask for a half-decaf Americano. It only has 75 mg of caffeine.

OR

a latte or cappuccino also only have 75 mg of caffeine which according to my doctor, is absolutely fine.
