Re: big dining room table
You won't believe what we did. I had the same problem so my husband made an extension out of plywood for my oval table. He made legs in the shape of an x under that area and then clamped the extension to the table somehow. I bought a very large thick table pad. You can't even tell where the joint is. I now have a great 12 foot table that can squeeze in 18 easily. I just have to keep the table cloth on it at all times, but I love it. The new legs I describe are on the far end of the room and cannot be noticed at all. My biggest problem was finding tablecloths large enough. I found a great solution for that also. I buy two cloths and overlap them in the center. Then I put a matching runner to cover where the two meet. Good luck with what you do. Nothing is better than having everyone sit together. Before that some people would go sit at the kitchen counter while the rest of us were in the dining room. Hated that!

Re: big dining room table
what style are you interested in?
You'd probably need at least a 14' table for 16 chairs. We have a 10' table that accommodates 10 chairs.
And as the above poster mentioned, finding linens is very difficult at that size. I know I'm limited when I need linens. Anything at the 12'+ length probably needs to be custom.
Just found this dealer who sells 14' and 16' tables, but again I don't know what style you're interested in: Aardvark Antiques A girlfriend of mine had a glass table custom made to accommodate a lot of dinner guests.
