I never had luck with regular tums, but the Smoothie Tums work wonders. Not sure why
I don't know what else you can take, mine never got that bad Maybe Maalox or Mylanta?

Re: Whats safe to take for horrible acid indigestion?
i've been on prescription prevacid for 2 months now and its helping. before it was awful and nothing worked.
pepcid & zantac are ok..just ask you dr if they have on they recommend. considering your situation with contractions and stuff..you might want to ask.
tums, mylanta, ...none of that worked for me.
I still cannot drink water unless its flavored with crystal lite or lemon/lime..it makes me want to barf and watery burps are just

Re: Whats safe to take for horrible acid indigestion?
Every OB is different...mine said no zantac or prevacid, he said there's no real studies on the effect to the baby...so I can only take Tums, Mylanta or Maalox. I've found the Maalox to work the best.

I've had 6 different ongyn's say NO zantac or prevacid as there are no long term studies and I have an ulcer that bursted during my last pregnancy! So trust me i am in severe pain and desperate for my Achiphex i guess all Dr's are different so for now i am sticking with Tums, milk of magnesia, mylanta to be safe

I also take Zantac and Aciphex. Tums didn't work for me. But I found that Maloxx worked pretty good. Try putting it in the fridge, makes it go down easier.
Aciphex is a class B medication.
Hope you feel better soon.

I have an ulcer and horrible acid reflux. I am on Nexium 40mg [for years] and it works wonders. Prevacid, Prilosec and Zantac never worked for me.

Your lucky, my insurance company stopped paying for my Nexium and now I am on Aciphex. Apparently it doesn't work as well as I ended up in the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. Now I have to take a Zantac 150 with my Aciphex. ANd Aciphex is only supposed to be used for short term use. I had been on Nexium for 5 years.

Why won't they pay for it anymore? I would die if they stopped. I've been on it for 10 years. What ins do you have? Maybe if they do mail order?

Re: Whats safe to take for horrible acid indigestion?
You can also try drinking a glass of whole milk when you feel the start of the burning. I took zantzc when I needed to. My Dr approved it

They say Aciphex is an equivilant to Nexium. Which is totally not true, as it is only supposed to be used for 1-2 months. And Nexium costs over 200 dollars for a 30 day supply.

Re: Whats safe to take for horrible acid indigestion?
My doctor always recommends zantac 2x/day and I totally trust him.
There is no way I could have gone through this pregnancy with the awful acid burning in my throat, it would have been torture. Definitely ask your doctor, you shouldn't be suffering!!

Re: Whats safe to take for horrible acid indigestion?
Does anyone know if Prevacid is category B or C? I get contradicting info. Also, is there anymore who had been on Prevacid while prego and now has a completely normal baby? Thanks

Re: Whats safe to take for horrible acid indigestion?
I also see a GI specialist who has done all my endoscopy's and he also told me to try to avoid using anything as there may be possible risks. Trust me i have been in tears as this is beyond burning and vomit. my last pregnancy I was vomiting blood ( they did not know it was an ulcer yet) and they are saying if it gets to that point I can take something but to be risk free avoid it. I've seen 6 obgyns as well who agreed. they said many people take it but there are no long term studies. I fyou go on Pariet ( which is the generic form-they prescribe overseas-website- it states not to take when pregnant) I just think every Dr is different and just go with your feeling. I only have 2 1/2 weeks left so I will suffer but be more at ease than the worry - been trying to avoid meds but not fully Do what you feel is best and between you and your Dr/GI/Obgyn
