I'm officially a homeowner!!

Yay we closed today!!

We went to the new house and started looking around and trying to plan on what we were going to do first. Its all so overwhelming and I just dont know where to begin.

My question is to all you homeowners...

What was the first thing you did when you bought your new home? Did you renovate the kitchen? Start with just painting? Get new carpeting, etc?

We were thinking of just painting and finishing the floors for now since we are getting married in July and are running out of time! (and money)

I have to of course reply and say Congrats even though i told you already!!!!

I cant wait to see your house! I am so happy for you both! YAH!!!!!

and even though you know what we did in our house first ill post for anyone else curious

the day we moved in we ripped up the carpeting in the 2 downstairs bedrooms. then soon after was the carpeting in the LR

next we worked on the main living areas. (we didnt need to do any major renos) we had the HW floors refinished (added HW to the kitchen), then in the lving room and 2 main bedrooms we spackled, sanded and painted. then carpeted the bedrooms.

Re: I'm officially a homeowner!!

Congrats!

We closed a couple of weeks ago and the first thing we did was rip up the nasty rugs, scrub the place down, and rip out the kitchen and bathroom. We'll be getting the floors refinished soon and then we'll paint.

We closed a week and a half ago. The house was completely move in ready (which was something that drew me to it in the first place) it had been recently painted with new carpeting in some of the living areas and the HW is in perfect condition. The one thing we did do was have a cleaning service come and give the house a good scrub down before moving in, even though it looked clean it would be gross no to! Congrats on being a homeowner! Congrats! Many years of happy memories in your new home! Chat Icon Chat Icon

The first thing we did was mow the lawn and pull out the 4 foot weeds. Chat Icon Then we did a lot of reno's, but we had the extra month at the time. We redid our kitchen, all new hardwoods, converted to gas for the whole house and then painted. We are still working on the house almost 2 years later. Take your time and enjoy your new home and of course being newly weds shortly. Chat Icon

Congratulations!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

The first things we tackled when we got our house were ripping up the carpet and cleaning up the wood floors underneath, painting every room, trim, closet, etc., and doing some quick fixes and cleaning the kitchen (put temporary flooring over the awful old linoleum, got a new fridge since the old one didn't work, and changed out the hardware).

We then made a list, prioritizing the "bigger" projects. We needed a washer and dryer and all of the work that goes with it since previously there was no dryer - so a vent, electric work and outlets, water lines replaced, etc., then the bathroom, then the kitchen. Meanwhile we had a list for the outside that starts with ripping out all of the overgrown hedges and then powerwashing the siding and painting the shutters.

Of course a leak in the bathroom made the bathroom renovation jump ahead, but we are getting back on track! That is just about done and we are now shopping for a washer and dryer. Just goes to show you that you can only plan so much.

As our very nice next door neighbor reminded us the other day, "Rome wasn't built in a day," and since we don't plan on going anywhere for a while we can take our time - and the same goes for you!

Enjoy your new house AND your wedding!! Congrats again!

fyi...first thing we did was change the locks! Chat Icon
We really didn't need to do much right away. We moved in about 3 weeks ago and we only did little things here and there so far. There's only one room we want to repaint and still want to get the carpets cleaned.

Congrats ! ! ! ! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We closed in Nov. but didnt move in till Mid Dec. since then we have:

1) Changed locks and toilet seats :)

2) Sanded all mouldings (they were dark brown) watta pia that was

3) Sanded, Spackled and painted some rooms (there are still 2 bedrooms and a laundry room to get to)

4) Redid the floors and added crown and base mouldings

After we ripped out the rug on stairs and started to move in slowly.

4) Changed some light fixtures

5) Bought new interior doors

6) Bought living and dining room sets. And addtional accent pieces as well as electronics

7) Then we started on the kitchen, we added cabinets, framed out the frige, added mouldings (upper and lower) added an island, hired someone to refinish cabinets and added granite.

8) Bought new vanity and mirrors for bathrooms.

9) By that time it was getting warmer and we started doing somethings outside. Spring cleanup, weeds, planting some flowers etc.
And of course, buying bbq and patio set.

9) In between all of this we had a small flood *shudder* and our boiler broke down, so when they say you can't plan for everything, i totally understand.

Im sure i left out 100 things, but overall its a work in progress and we have learned to not kill ourselves or get overwhelmed, one thing at a time, and we have plenty of time (30years :)

Re: I'm officially a homeowner!!

Wow - what a busy and exciting time for you! Congratulations on it all Chat Icon

I'd just concentrate on 'clean' - i.e. new / cleaned carpets, refinished floors, new coats of paint in each room. As long as the rest of the house is inhabitable, you can take each room one at a time - no reason to rush. Enjoy everything you have going on right now!
