Rezoning two family house to one
Does anybody have experience with this? We found "our house" but the taxes are insane because it is a legal two family by c/o
We either want to make it legal two by permit or one familY (depending on what the taxes would be).

i am interested in this as well, there is a house in our location in our price range that is two family but taxes are high. figured to go to the town/village and ask but maybe someone knows here.

Wouldn't re-zoning it require you remove the second kitchen and bathroom in the apartment?
If this is the case, i'd rather leave it the way it is and pay the additional 10-15% in taxes.
You never know when that apartment may come in handy. But that's just me.

yea you just removed the kitchen but if there is a second meeter this is where i get confused. Guess I will have to call the mayor of our village and see.
I would keep it but I rather not since we would not be renting.

We are going through this right now and it's been a logistical nightmare and we havent even SIGNED THE CONTRACT yet! Just know that your mortgage financing will change (for us with Wells, we'd have to pay a point) if its not rezoned before contract because if the contract states two family underwriting may view it that way even if it appraises as a one...

I don't have direct experience with this, but my parents do. When they bought their current house it was zoned as a two family (apartment upstairs with separate entrance).
They knocked a hole in the wall between the downstairs and the entrance for the upstairs apt (where my grandparents were living) and had the house downgraded to a single family with two kitchens. (I believe all that was involved was having someone come out and inspect, and having the walkway between the two areas opened up also helped in proving their point).
ETA: they did all of this AFTER they bought the house
