Re: Cabinets under 10K?
I dont know about prices- but my friend recently moved into an older home & they painted the cabinets white and it made a world of difference and then she added granite countertops- it was cheaper to go that way & it came out gorgeous

Re: Cabinets under 10K?
Possible. We don't have a huge kitichen, but I got a lovely pantry (it literally holds all our food) and nice cabinets for about $9K I think.
Kraftsmaid - from Consumer Kitchens
There's a pic in my album- they're the tall ones too

Did you look at the HD off the shelf options?

Re: Cabinets under 10K?
Mrs Fab - we've considering painting the cabinets ourselves, white actually b/c that is what we want - but from what i've researched it takes a long time to do it right - i've seen lots of before and after pics on a home forum (gardenweb)and the cabinets come out great if you know what you are doing i'm not sure if DH and I can handle it - i think we can - but it would be a serious project!
I know we would def be doing granite counters - and i'm not sure if it is smart to paint the cabinets and then add granite counters...What would happen when the paint job gets crappy in a few years and the cabinets need to be replaced? Will they be able to remove the old cabinets and replace with new cabinets without damaging the counter?
We know we want white cabinets - whether we DIY or buy new ones is the question.

Re: Cabinets under 10K?
White cabinets are generally cheaper - the cost goes up when you're dealing with fancier woods and stains. Also, try IKEA - they have great prices and are rated very well.

We looked at cabinets at home depot - we actually looked at the ones Jess (Camacho) has in her house - the American Woodmark ones. We both liked those. We didn't have exact measurements so we really couldn't get a quote.
What are the off the shelf options?

I didn't even think of Ikea! I'll have to see what they have.....not sure if they'll have the kind of style we want though - we want a modern country kitchen if that makes sense I'm not really sure how to describe it. My vision is white cabinetry, maybe a farmhouse sink, oil rubbed bronze hardware on the cabinets, light beige or gold granite counters, white subway tile backsplash, and dark wood floors - and stainless appliances of course....
So as you can see adding in new cabinetry would really jack up the kitchen budget....it would def be cheaper to paint them....

Re: Cabinets under 10K?
I have the American Woodmark cabinets from HD and I love them. We have cherry wood with lots of features and wall cabinets that go to the ceiling. I highly recommend them, I have them for 3 years and no complaints. We didn't have HD install though, we used our own contractor.

Do you think they are hard to install yourself? Not me and DH but maybe DH and my Dad. My Dad is super handy - he's actually a hobby carpenter and he says he knows how to hang cabinets so I think that DH could help him but it seems like a big job to me - my Dad IS getting old ...

oh wow! i checked out your reno pics and they looked really gorgeous...
i think that 6k would be pushing it for us. if it was 10k i don't think DH would go for that
my thing is - if we paint them i think they'll look great now.....but in 3-5 years when there is hopefully a toddler running around they'll probably be stained, chipped and falling apart....not to mention in this particular home we are looking at the cabinets are already 9 years old (and they are builder grade, nothing crazy)....so im thinking we might be better off just replacing them when we do the kitchen over....

What are the off the shelf options?
They have a white option, walnut option, espresso option and a honey collored option.
Everything is there in boxes, you take the bases you need and then the doors.
I think you have to do all your own measurements but they do have a lot to chose from provided you like one of the 4 options.
I think Ikea might be an option as well for staying under 10k.
Do you want to stay under 10k in total including install or are you willing to DIY and spend all the budget on cabinets?

Totally Doable! Go to Colleg Point Blvd. there are a ton of places. We got our granite there. I wished we got our cabinets there too. Half the price of places we checked, including HD.

i know my DH wouldn't want to spend more than 5-6K - i would do the install ourselves if we had too - my Dad knows what he is doing for the most part hahahaha....i don't think we could fit the taller cabinets (although i LOVE tall cabinets ) but i would def want something with a crown molding on top.
this is the "potential" kitchen - if its not this exact kitchen it would most likely be something similair in layout.....Image Attachment(s):

i'd have to use a chain like HD, Lowes, Ikea - b/c we'll be in Florida when its time to purchase...of course i can check out stores once we are there - but i know at HD we can at least open a credit card to get no interest for a year or a deal like that

Re: Cabinets under 10K?
I think it might be doable if you just shop around. This is what I would do, wait until you close on the house (so you don't get your hopes up ), then take your measurements of the room and go to HD, Lowe's & Ikea and get quotes. You never know, you might get lucky with prices. Of course installing yourselves would save you a lot of money.
As for painting the cabinets, not a bad option of course. Would give the room a whole new look. And you can add the other things you were talking about. But yes, you are taking a chance with putting the granite on now and then replacing the cabinets down the road. I'm sure no granite company would guarantee at the time of removing them that they wouldn't break. Could you live with the counter tops the way they are now, but paint the cabinets white?

this is the predicament we've had in every potential house - we've never seen a kitchen that has white cabinets.....so we know its either paint or replace.....
i guess once we know for sure which kitchen will be ours we can shop around - but if we can't do anything for under 10K than it will def be paint but if we can get something for around 5ish and install ourselves i think new would be the way to go....

Re: Cabinets under 10K?
My mom just ordered new cabinets from a cabinet maker. I thought it would be really expensive but it ended up being CHEAPER then the Lowes quote and were around the price you are looking to spend. I believe the company is called Sterling. They are really nice cherry cabinets. Good Luck!

Re: Cabinets under 10K?
If your cabinets are solid wood, it would make much more sense to either paint them or hire someone to paint them then to go out and spend all that money on cheaper quality cabinets. If they are painted correctly they will not look crappy in a few years.

I think you can find something for around 5 or 6K and install yourself. At least you have what you want when you move into the house. Plus the granite of course. But you never know, you might find a house with cabinets you want. Have you spoken with CaMacho about the price of her cabinets. She bought in Florida also. Her kitchen is gorgeous! And they installed the cabinets themselves. Saved lots that way. GL!

Re: Cabinets under 10K?
We just went to consumers kitchen and bath in Commack. We have a very small Galley kitchen. One side is 106 and the other side is about 69. Our kitchen cabinets are Maple with a ginger sable glaze and spent just under 3K. We went to Lowes, HD and had a private contractor come in and all of them were about 4K for the same cabinets. Just be warned, when you go to HD they won't give you an estimate unless you pay one of their guys $100 to come out and measure. I fought that and they did give me an estimate with the measurements we gave them. Lowes won't give you anything in writing.
good luck!
