I'm officially a freak.
This is a diagram of my daylily and perennial bed that I just created in Microsoft Visio. Color coordinated to match the shrub/flower colors.
Yup, I got it bad. There's only one person who I think is going to look at this and say... hmm... I wonder if I should do the same thing...

Re: I'm officially a freak.
I'd do it if I knew what Visio was!
I have a lot less stuff & a good memory, but I was thinking of making a chart & notes if & when we sell.

Re: I'm officially a freak.
I actually bought a 3D program, and I've been doing my house floor plan in there, and I'm also laying out the yard. I can put trees and bushes in the layout, and see how things will look in different seasons, and over several years, so I can tell if a tree I plant will shade different areas in 10 years from now.
Yes, I'm a self-proclaimed freak, too...

Re: I'm officially a freak.
Nice!!! I never thought of using Visio. Good idea! I might have to try that now. I keep using PowerPoint to do mine.
ETA: I guess I'm the third freak on here then. Glad to know I'm not alone.

Re: I'm officially a freak.
I've done it on paper, never had the time to move it to Visio.
We always forget where we have our spring bulbs planted in the summer, so when we want to plant annuals we need to refer to the 'map' to make sure that we're not ripping anything out without knowing it.

Re: I'm officially a freak.
Betsy, I've only got a 1/4 acre. The visio makes it look larger than it is, I just had to make the text big enough to read. This is the actual bed as it was a few weeks ago before I planted the other stuff:
Once the new stuff starts filling in, I'm going to take progress photos.
I save the tags too and I'm looking for a good way to store those. I'm thinking a small binder meant for CD's but I could put the tags in instead. I could sort them by the sections of the yard they're in.
Shawn, what program did you get? I'm actually looking for something that is a full-on garden program where I can track typical tasks via calendar like when to prune, fertilize, a database of what I have (which I'm currently doing with Excel), etc.
Linda, I thought of that too, and I want to plant things in front of where the spring bulbs are to hide the crappy foliage that's there now. I know you're supposed to leave it until it dies off itself but I want to hide it with something that won't block it when they're in bloom but will grow after it's spent... I'm thinking more daylilies.
Jen, I like yours better because you have actual images of what it looks like! Maybe I should do that next.
Glad to know I'm not alone!

Re: I'm officially a freak.
I actually designed my house addition in Visio originally....
I got the HGTV Platinum suite http://www.homedesignsoftware.tv/?tr1=4217 It does everything. Floor plans, 3d views, surfaces and textures, paint color, landscaping, plantings, etc. It's pretty easy to use, and you can add as much or as little detail as you want. I was originally overwhelmed with the details, but then realized that I can just take the defaults, and it's good enough for what I need most of the time.

It's the only way for me. I need to actually see the area and what it will look like. Try it and you will probably love it. Actually Shawns software looks great. I'm sure something you would love even more then Visio or PowerPoint.
