What are the Margins on a Word Document?
in a normal letter sized paper?

I think it's 1" or 1 1/2" left & right, and 1" top & bottom.

I'd say that is personal preference.. Mine are 1 inch on each side and 2 inches at the top to accommodate my letterhead

During college, I tried to use about a 4" margin on both sides....

I usually do 1" all around. If I need to fill up a little more space I will do 1.5 or 2 on the top and bottom.
If I have a lot to fit into one page I do .5 all around.
