gift for a bris?

Can anyone tell me what an appropriate gift for a bris is? I was thinking $$, but wanted to be sure that was appropriate. Any ideas are welcomed.

Thanks!!

Re: gift for a bris?

I would give what I would give for a Christening or a Baby Naming Cermony. I think all religous events a monentary gift is standard. $$$

Re: gift for a bris?

I got money from some people and clothes from others. If you give money, I'd try to give in multiples of 18.

How come? Just curious. I've never heard of giving in multiples of $18 before.

The Hebrew word "Chai" means life and it has a numerical value of 18. So for weddings and bar mitzvahs people ususally give in multiples of 18. For a bris though b/c its only 8 days after the baby is born, people usually just give a present they would have normally given when the baby was born. whether its money or clothes or a somthing off the registry (since most jewish people dont have baby showers).

Re: gift for a bris?

interesting. I would have never known the "18" thing. Good to keep in mind for when my friends have kids who are Jewish.

Usually money, but since most or many jewish women do not have baby showers, if she has a registry, you can get something from that.

As someone who did not have a shower, I would REALLY appreciate something off the regristry. We had to purchase 95% of what was necessity for DD when she was born off our registry.

if you got them a baby gift off their registry, etc.-- then another gift is not necessary IMO.

I don't think she registered. This is her third baby so she has a lot of the basics. I sent her some stuff when the baby was born...something for her 2 older kids, a onesie that says little brother, and an organic bath robe. (I know a bris is usually close to the birth, but the baby was born a month early and there were some complications, so I sent the gifts about 3 weeks ago.) I was going to just give a check for the bris.

Ok, so if she wasn't having a bris, would you normally get her something else?

the only time I was in this sitch was when a friend had a baby naming for her daughter. I had already given them a baby gift-- but I brought a little something with me to the ceremony-- which was a personalized something or other from Things Remembered-- looked like it was more $$ than it cost.

If you already have given a gift it is not necessary to give another on for the Bris.
I have the same issue with a baby naming, Im giving something small since I already gave her a baby gift when she was born 5 months ago. Some of my friends said they give checks for $18 for baby namings since they already have given gifts.
